Resident of Washington and Grand son of Former Supreme Court Justice. William D. Baldwin, eighty-one years] 4, patent attorney of this city and a grandson of Henry Baldwin, formerly associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, died this morning at ‘his residence at the Cordove apartment. ‘He had been in failing health for several years. Funeral services have not been arranged Mr. Baldwin was born in Franklin, Tenn. September 20, 1834. He came to Washington with his parents In 1831 He was educated at the best private schools of the day in Tennessee and in Washington city. After a short experience in commercial life in New York city and in Washington his hereditary instincts led him to become a lawyer. In 1656 he entered the office of Peter H. Watson, then the leading patent attorney of the District, where he remained until 1859, when he became a patent solicitor on his own account, admitted to the Bar. He was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the District of Colum bia in 1862, and of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1869. In 1861 ,Mr. Baldwin served for a short time a= = private In the Union army, from which he was honorably discharged at the ex spiration of his service. In 1874 he organized the firm of Baldwin, Hopkins Peyton, which lasted until 1888. Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Peyton are Wott dead. In 1887 Mr. Baldwin opened a New York office in connection with Prank L Pope, one of the electrical experts of that day. Betires in 1910. In 1888 he organised the Grim of Bald win, Davidson Wight, with oMces in Washington and New York. In 1904 Mr. Davidson took over the New York business and the business (a Washing ton was continued under the firm name of Baldwin Wight. In 100, at the age of seventy, he retired from setire practice, the busines being con tnued by Mr. Wight under the old firm name.
