, For iho DuaJocitAT..Common School*.'th.' Mr. Editor In these days oJsmoney-making antPpoliiical excitement, the edu-! Si cation 'of the masses should hot he lost sight1S; of, much less the^best mode oj^promoting1 ei it. I telievefikat nt the present tirite, in1 this part of the world, common schools are not paying operations 5 of course there are01trsome exceptions. The greatest reason ap- 11prehended is this, viz: the low standard of jS£scwages. For this reason the ablest and 1 tjmost competent teachers are compelled toseek some more lucrative employment.— s:The average rate of wages paid here does; P 0 ° #! I1not exceed twenty-five dollars per month—: not as much as a common wood-sawyer can command. This should not be the case, and as one of the grand improvements in. common schools, I suggest the propriety of L raising the wages. L'Another deficiency is the system of. i teaching; a great many of the teachers. r now employed in the county have 110, or 1 £ at the most a poof, understanding of the* true system of teaching. Classification I consider one of the most important items in conducting a school. Not only should the scholarship of the pupil be considered, but also the capability of grasping the abstract reasoning of Mathematics, c,— Dull scholars should not be suffered to act J as drawbacks upon the more bright ones, 1 but should be classed together ; for if pu-!‘pils are classified indiscriminately, the dull ones will either retard the progress of their [Lclassmates, or will be compelled to skip j along over the surface of their studies, 5 thus deriving no benefit whatever. 11Another important it'in is a system of | ■ i rewards. They excite emulation, stimulate the ambition, and arouse the latent energies of the mind. I know it can be urged that an education should bo a sufficient j reward, but alas! how many do not realize the importance of an education until the opportunity of obtaining it passes away, never to return. With your permission, Mr. Editor, I may, at a future time, offer a few remarks j upon Punishment.
