Mrs. J. E. Deely, Superintendent of Schools, points out the serious condition that now faces the schools of Comanche County. The problem is the high cost of liv ing in Comanche County with the ir boom on the prices everywhere following the close of the War, but no increase in teachers sal women only $435. Board on ac count of the high prices of gro ceries now costs from $20 to $30 per month. Compare this with the wages the laborers receive, and you will re alize why the teachers cannot afford to stay on the job. Most of the county schools were contracted for last spring and since that time there have been such a change in the cost of liv ing, that 50 per cent of the teach ers would have resigned their schools in the fall had they not felt themselves honor bound by their contract. Many of them are now teaching at a sacrifice they cannot afford. One of the most alarming things about the whole situation is that most of the efficient teachers say that they will not renew their contracts for another year. They are either going to quit the pro fession or go elsewhere for bet ter salaries. We now have in this county a number of teachers that are poorly qualified as teachers. They barely made grades sufficient to secure a second grade certificate and many of them have no am bition to rise higher in the pro fession. 95% of our county schools are now paying all they can under the present local tax rate. We must raise the tax rate. No nation can rise higher than its citizens and the boys and girls of today are the citizens of to morrow. What inspiration can our children get from second grade teachers who are paid less than half of the daily pay of a labor er. We are in danger of bolshevism and anarchy unless we educate our children. I hope every friend of educat ion in this county will thing seri ously of the danger that threatens our public schools and rally to the support of any plan that will re eve the educational situation. Our best teachers are going to the town schools whenever they get a chance, just last week. Mrs. Robert Eaton on of our truly great teachers was added to the faculty of the Comanche schools, and we cannot blame her for that. Miss Ada Carwile, who has been with the First State Bank, has accepted a position with the local post office, where she formerly worked. Clyde Marshall, who has been with the local post office since his honorable discharge from the army, left Sunday for Fort Worth where he has a similar position. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Arthur, formerly of Comanche, had hard luck last week. While they were away from home last Saturday, their home burned, nothing was saved. There were two families in the house and both lost all their household possessions. Mr. Arthur is employed with the express company. J. B. Layne superintendent of the Comanche Schools, has selected to conduct the summer normal John Tarleton College, according to an announcement of J. Thomas Davis, Dean of Tarle ton. T. M. Pulliam who has been with the Durham Brothers Furn iture Department has opened an exclusive music store in Comanche in the Farmers and Merchants Bank building on the west side of the square. Miss Johnnie Carter of Beattie has gone to Brownwood to attend school. We regret to lose her as she is a jolly girl and one of Beat tie’s best ball players. The concrete work on the Co manche Public Square was com pleted last week at a cost of $16, 400. Of this amount the city paid approximately $5,600 a little more than one third cost of the project. A committee consisting of T. J. Williams, George Smith, Herb ert Goodson, Y. W. Holmes, J. D. Waring, Dave Jennings, William Reese, and M .Coleman have been appointed to raise money around the square for the “Near East Relief”. 000 From The Comanche Chief February 6, 1908 R. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Reese were here from Dublin Wednesday. Miss Tommie Adams of De Leon is visiting Judge Dabney and wife After a long illness, F. E. Adams is able to be on the streets again. Dave Switzer of Weatherford spent a few days in Comanche this week with his father, Uncle Cape. Hilton Burks left Wednesday on a business trip to Dallas and Waco. Sid Thomas who is now pub lishing a paper in Brownwood, was in Comanche on business this week. Coker and Harris will pay you the highest market price for your produce, _. J. M. Thomas of Jones County, formerly of Beattie, was here on business this week. Charlie Heflin was here from Fort Smith Arkansas to visit his father who is ill. Dr. A. E. Acton has a nice four room house for sale. White Point is coming to the front. We now have a great many conveniences, including daily mail a telephone connection with the outside world, a blacksmith and saddle harness and windmill re pair shop. Who would want a bet ter place than White Point, and live in the country where you can enjoy town conveniences and country comforts. For some cause or other the mail carrier failed to make his regular route to Democrat Sat urday, leaving the people nothing to read on Sunday. It likely had a good effect by causing some of them to read their Bible. Our very efficient Democrat Postmaster, Ed Dudley, is on the sick list. With the other leading rural districts around Comanche having a rural route, we see no reason why Democrat should not have one too, come on Comanche and help us get it. Jack McCollunt of Gap came over to White Point Sunday. What were you doing here, Jack? J. B. Nabers has returned to his home at White Point from north of Comanche where he has been building a tenant house for C. M. Meadows. S. C. Findley who has been ap pointed to fill the office of County Superintendent which was crea ted by the last session of the legis lature,, has announced as a can didate for that office. Mr. Findley is a teacher of ability and has taught for fourteen years, includ ing three years at Hasse and three years at the East Side in Comanche. FE. E. Anthony who has owned the Chief for a year, has sold it back to 8. J. Thomas, who is now publishing a paper in Brown. Frank Chancellor will have charge of the Chief for Mr. Thomas and will serve as editor and business manager. Mr. Chancellor has been in the newspaper business before coming to Comanche and we are glad to welcome him to Comanche. He comes from Brownwood where he has been vi siting Mr. Thomas He worked with a Houston paper after leaving Comanche. In the noted criminal case at Fort Worth, Harry K. Thaw was found not guilty of the murder of Bramford White by reason of in sanity. He escaped the electric chair but has been committed to an asylum for the criminally in sane. D. 8. Hitt the popular merchant of Energy, was in the county seat on business Tuesday. Miss Minnie Anthony began a subscription school at the C. i Bryson school Wednesday and is doing nicely. Neely Harris-Cunningham will hold a big sale starting Saturday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bain of AM College were here last week to attend the funeral services of his grandfather, Henry 8. Bain.
