Choices abound for those seeking lively 4thLincoln-Way area residents should have no trouble keeping busy this weekend with plenty of activities to choose from to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.Activities throughout the weekend will include the first annual Mokena Lions club car show; evening concerts; a carnival; games and contests for kids; helicopter rides, and fireworks in both Frankfort and Mokena.There also will be the 15th annual Fred Lehmann 10-mile race, a community worship service and crowning of the Lions club teen queen.THE MOKENA Lions club-sponsored carnival will open tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Community park on LaPorte road. Saturday, Sunday and Monday the carnival opens at 1 p.m. Closing times are 11 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, and 11:30 p.m. Monday.Meanwhile, helicopter rides will be available at the park on Sunday andMonday beginning at 2 p.m. Rides are $10 per person. Trips include an aerial view of Mokena or Frankfort (Connecticut Hills). Helicopter rides end at 8 p.m. Sunday when set-up begins for the fireworks display.On Saturday the Mokena Lions club will feature a custom car show, including new and old autos, street rods,” restored and original cars, antiques, trucks and vans. The show opens at noon, with trophies awarded at 4 p.m. Registration is from 10 a.m. until noon. Participants must supply crayons.More than $100 in carnival ride tickets will be awarded as contest prizes.Also open during carnival hours will be the Mokena PTA’s picture booth, where youngsters can have their photos taken with “E.T ” and his friends. The photo booth closes at 9 p.m.Meanwhile, the Big Tent” will feature games for younger children at nominal prices, and the Mokena Theater Guild will apply clown make-up for kids and adults. Tony the Organ Grinder and his monkey, Chris, will entertain throughout Sunday at the park.OUTDOOR CONCERTS will be presented Saturday, Sunday and Monday on the stage near the main ball diamond Saturday’s 7 p.m. program will be a Red, White and Blue musical review featuring local talentand audience participation of familiar patriotic songs.Sunday at 7:30 p.m. the Lincoln-Way high school summer concert band will perform, and on Monday at 8 p.m. the Continental Singers will present a concert of Christian contemporary music. The Continentals’ performance is sponsored by the Mokena-Marley Clergy association.Saturday’s events also will include three Mokena Baseball association ballgames. At 12:15 p.m., the farm league All-Stars will play; at 2:15 p.m., the minor league All-Stars will take to the field, and at 4:15 p.m., the girls junior league All-Star teams will play.Sunday’s activities will include a 10 a.m. community worship service at Mokena park (in the event of rain, the service will be held at Willow-crest school); the annual Mokena Chamber of Commerce parade at 1 p.m. (step-off is at the village hall); a fire department water ball contest at 2:15 p.m., and awarding of paradetrophies at 2:30 p.m. at the park.THE MINUTH STUDIO of Dance will perform excerpts from “No, No Pinocchio at the park’s main stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, followed by Tony and Chris the Wonder Monkey at 4 p.m. and a karate demonstration by Mokena park district classes at 4:45 p.m.The 1983 Mokena Lions club teen queen also will be crowned Sunday night.
