Officials DiscountReport Of 3 MenIn Control TowerThree Hamilton Field airmen reported flying saucers over the field last night, but Air Force officials don’t plan to do anything about it.According to reports first published in today's Oakland Tribune, a disc-shaped object roaring between 1,000 and 1,500 miles perhour made at least five passes at thefield, about 1:30 am.Corp. Roger O. Pryor was firstto sight the object. He said he sawa blue flame shooting out as thesaucer flashed by at about 2,000 feet altitude.UJ thought It was a falling star, but it didn't fan. It just kept on going,'* Pryor said.Staff Sgt. Ellis R. Lorlmer and Staff Sgt. Virgil Cappuro also reported seeing the object They said it appeared circular, thick in the center and tapered to the edges. Its speed was so great, they said, they couldn't estimate its size. They reported it made at least threepasses, seemingly directly over theHamilton beacon, which is justnorth of the field.Major James E. Johnston, Ham-Iton Field public information officer, verified that the reports had been received and that the men had been interviewed.The men t61d us the phenomenon,” he said, was traveling much faster than ordinary aircraft andapparently was visible only for a short period of time.”There were no known aircraft hi the air at the time nor did any land at the field soon thereafter, John-sfcon said.Johnston also stated that the ale force has conducted numerous investigations of flying saucer reports, concluding they all were hoaxes,natural phenomenon or mass hysteria.Because, of this, Johnston concluded, no further action will betaken regarding last night’s affair.PLANNED NO ACTIONIn Washington, Air Force headquarters said it had received no information about the incident and planned no action because ‘It ispurely a local matter” A spokesman said that if the base commander feels the incident to be of sufficient importance, he will notify headquartersInformal suggestions there werethat the Hamilton Field observersmay have seen a jet plane searching for its base.Last year the Air Force concluded after a study of strange sightings that all analysis indicated the saucer” reports were based on misinterpretation of conventional objects, resulted from mass-hysteriaor ware due to hoaxes. Two months ago the defense department reported none of the services were working on any device which might fit the flying saucer category.n
