In accordance with the recommendation of the convention of the people, held at Law renceburgh on the 5th inst., the citzens of Clay township met in the Brick Church, in Dillsborough, on the 12th of June, for the purpose of expressing their grateful acknowl edgments to the Supreme Ruler of the Uni verse for the passage of a law to prohibit the traffic in intoxicating drinks, which is to be in force from and after to day. The Sons of Temperance and Templars met at their Hall and formed in procession and marched to the Presbyterian Church, where a large numbe rf citizens had already assembled. After singing and prayer, the following preamble atic resolutions were presented by a commit tee that had been previously appointed by Hopewell Division. After some discussion, in which brothers Martin, Olcott, Miller, Egelston, and Purcell took a part, they were unanimously adopted. Wuerras. The evils of the liquor traffic had become almost universally destructive, of the best interests of human society, and has swallowed up more of hope and hap piness than all other evils combined; and adhereas, the united efforts of the chris tian, philanthropist, and patriot, under a well-directed train of God's Providence, have secured the passage of a tip that drives from our State the traffic in all in toxicating drinks, which is the harbinger of hope to many despairing hearts; and whereas, it has been the custom of the peo ple, in ancient and modern ages, to meet together and celebrate distinguished events, therefore , Resolved, That it is the opinion of this meeting that the passage of the Prohibitory Liquor Law, which goes into effect to-day, forms an important era in the history of our beloved State, as well as in the progress of our great Temperance reform. Resolved, That it is due to the occasion that the citizens should meet together and hail with suitable demonstrations the advent of this propitious measure. Resolved, That our grateful acknowledge ments of thanksgiving are due to our benefi cent Benefactor,and that they are hereby publicly expressed for this striking manifes tation of His approval of the efforts of the friends of our race, in bringing about this glorious result, Resolved, That we recommend it Prohib itory Liquor Law to the favorable consider ation of all parties, and ask of its friends and enemies a fair and impartial trial. Resolved, That the friends of this law confidently believe that the following good will result from its faithful administration : That law and order will take the place, of vice and immorality, and that crime, pau perism and human suffering will be dimin ished and taxation reduced. [= Resolved, That in view of all the benefits which are expected to result from this beni ficent law, we with much confidence call upon all men, women and children, to raise their voices, their hands, and their hearts, in its support. : cay a.
