TODAY'S EDITORIALMany I nanswered Questions Follow Franklin ActionIn view of his oft-repeated statements that the way to eradicate crime is to be tough with the offenders, the district attorney's action in dismissing assault charges against a local hotel owner appears in rather strange light.Frank Carol!, builder of the landmark, was accused in a formal complaint of assaulting one Leonard England, an interior decorator, in the hotel last April.Franklin, in dismissing the charge, made the somewhat cryptic announcement that. “I'm not going to let my office be used as an instrument of personal or political revenge.’’It must be obvious from that that the district attorney has some information that isn’t shared with the general public or with England himself.In conversations with this newspaper, following dismissal of the charges. England said he wasn’t aware that the charges were going to be dismissed as there was no prior consultation with him.We aren't taking sides in this controversy or assessing any blame because we aren't familiar with the circumstances surrounding the filing of assault and battery charges.We do state, however, that the district attorney should have given a more complete explanation of his actions, especially since he is concerned by what he terms a grow ing disrespect for the law The district attorney's action docs little to inculcate respect for the law enforcement apparatus, leaving as it dries so many questions unanswered
