Wally off radioRoger N«ginThe Chronicle-TeiegramA reorganization of the staff at WEOL AM-930 has at least temporarily silenced 20-year veteran sports announcer Wally Mintus.Mintus' last director was June 30, although he could return as early as September forp af l - limeduties as a color commentator oniilQil O^ilUUisports broadcasts.“They downsized my job, eliminated my position,” said Mintus, who would’ve beenwith the station 20 years this October. “Three or four other people are sharing my responsibilities.“They did offer me a chance to stay on as color commentator (on play-by-play broadcasts). I do appreciate that. I might still do that. They left the option open, but I’m not positive of my schedule.” Since leaving the station Mintus has been working as a salesman at Spitzer Chevroletin Ambers*-—™ ^ ~ w a* ■“I’m trying to put my energy into selling cars and learning that business,” said Mintus, who was sports director forthe station since 1993. “I may get the itch to get into radio again. This was a shock after all those years. Now I want to get my head clear of radio fora whilp ^WEOL President Gary Kneisley indicated it was difficult to let the popular Mintus go.“Wally’s a good guy,” he said. “We would welcome him as a color commentator. WEOL (930-AM) has earned The Associated Press Best Sports Station award eight of the lastnine years.
