thCCwthannccoOne Hundred Miles an Hour!—Wecopy the following from the eummary inthe National Intelligencer, of the proceed* ings of the Senate on Friday, If Mr. Davidson’s plan succeeds, all ‘‘fast mails” and telegraphic establishments will receive their quietus:“Mr. Linn presented a memorial from R. O. Davidson of the city of St. Louis, asking an appropriation of not less thanjJa two, nor more than five thousand dollars,! th to test an experiment for carrying the'onmails through the air. The memorialist jca stated that it can be conveyed at the rate lai t of 100 miles per hour; that his plan is in- on dubilahUj correct, as it rests upon a prin- th ciple founded in Nature, adopts a form'do drawn from Nature, and employs manual;tie power to put it in motion. Mr. Linn di; said the memorial was really a very well- j th drawn document, evidently showing Mr.'er Davidson to be a man of science and ajou 3 scholar. With regard to the practical!- in (,!ityofthe plan, Mr. Linn did not knowjde tjwhat to say; his mind was in that state nu denominated 4bctweenitij.’ Hardly any'palimits were set to human ingenuity andjof invention. Ho considered the plan as 'of J feasible. All new inventions—at least y\ those out of the common order—were pa l apt to excite ridicule in some, and con-,in tempt in others. It had been the case be with all the great pioneers in science.! if Galileo, Harvey, Watt, and Fulton, were in '‘all made to feel, more or less, the truth Li of that remark. It was really a document) tic of so much ability that he thought it ought-po to be treated with respect anu attention. He would therefore move that it be referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads, and that it bo printed.Mr. Norvell said, with a smile, it had f better go to the Select Committee on Mileage; it might bo the means of aiding that Committee in fixing the shortest distance.Mr. Benton said he thought it ought to be laid on the table, and ho hoped his col-leage (Mr. Linn) would content himself with laying it on the table, without having it printed.general smile through the Senate.]The memorial was then laid on the table.rtiten in imicoonY.WultmeRcBtllie;asho;Ur
