Veterans home resident John Traber (seated) poses Dec. 31 with other members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8555. Traber, an Army rifle man in World War II, survived hand-to-hand combat against Japanese soldiers on the Solomon Islands and in the Philippines. He was wounded twice in 3-1/2 years in the 145th Infantry Battalion, 37th Infantry Division. Traber’s new residence, the Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville, has 160 beds in private and semiprivate rooms. John Traber gives a “thumbs up” when asked how he likes his new liv ing quarters; family and staff members watch.
