A great deal has been y said, and truly said, of our wonderful prosperity, and the almost fabulous amounts of gold that has been shipped from ourshores. But with all our apparent pros- .perity, with all the gold that^we dig from j our mines, and which is smelted in every j mint, and stamped in the coin of every ^ civilized nation on earth; the question may y be asked, are we a contented, are vre a j happy people/ We answer most emphati ^ cally, no !
