WEOL announces new programmingSteve FogartyThe Chrontcle-TelegramELYRIA — Listeners of WEOL AM Radio 930 began hearing a new sound tins week with the addition of “The Mitch Albom Show from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays.The Detroit radio personality’s afternoon talk show slices into an hour of consumer advocate Clark Howard’s daily show and the 4 to 5 p.m. slot formerly occupied by WEOL’s Larry Wright and Chris Coleman.“We wanted to add some new programming elements and utilize the talents of our own people a little differently,” said Bruce Van Dyke, WEOL assistant operations manager A nationally syndicated columnist and best-sellmg author of “Tuesdays with Mor-ne,” Albom hosts a syndicated talk and-mterview show that focuses on timely topics and personalities in the news. This week, his guests included an astronaut discussing the Columbia disaster and several people involved m the LeBron James saga “We try to avoid people who do strong political talk,” Van Dyke said. “We don’t want someone who shouts at his guests Mitch tries to bring common sense to radio.” Albom’s column appears m The Chromcle-Telegram.Avid listeners of “The Clark Howard Show” will still get two hours of the consumer champion each weekday from 1 to 3 pm.Other changes include the premiere of “The Other Side of Mornmg Drive.” Airing m the 9 to 10 a.m. slot formerly occu pied by Bill King, the new program is hosted by WEOL News Director Craig Adams and' j -?newsman Larry Wright. The show features interviews with area newsmakers This week’s guests included Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and Lorain Mayor Craig Foltm“We’re allowing more people to get into the interview process,” Van Dyke said of the shift. “Morning is an important time.”Listeners traditionally tune in most in the morning.King’s show will now air from 6 to 9 a.m. weekdays.Van Dyke said the changes were not made in response to a decline in listeners.it’s more a case of looking to see where we could make changes that have positives to them,” he said.Van Dyke said audiences had become somewhat “static” for certain segments of the day No other changes are being made to the station’s other major programming blocks, according to Van Dyke. Nighttime hours will continue to be devoted primarily to high school and college sports, including Ohio State basketball, and pro sports such as Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball and Columbus Bluejackets NHL hockey Lorain County Printing Publishing Co., which publishes The Chronicle Telegram, is majority owner of the radio station.
