Somewhere in France, Nov. 4, 1918. Miss Mary Hopper Dear Sis: Your letter of Sept. 25th. re ceived, and was glad to hear from you again, although it is after a long anxious waiting for it, just as you were waiting for mine, I was exceedingly surprised to hear that you was just now re ceiving my first letter but in all probability you have my others by now, if not you will get them soon. _ You must never worry in‘case you don’t hear from me as often as you would like for when chance and time permits] will write. ‘The story I am going to tell so much about as I can is “My First Experience in the Actual War.” It is a fact that I cannot write it as I could tell you personally. We have been at the front and gone “‘over the top,’’ making one of the biggest drives that ever was made and of course I am proud to be here and say I have been over the top. It was the night after our first day’ at the front that we had most of our fun, and it was also the only time that the enemies had to show any resistance. For two days and partly nights we compelled the darn bodies to retreat and of course we were right on their heels, but after we stopped we then realized our victory and gain which was a vast ground of which the Bocies evidently did not expect to give up just then. The night of our fun the en emies attempted to bluff us by means of heavy artillery, high explosive, gas shell which was at first somewhat exciting but like a miracle we advanced forward. One manual work of import ance that I have learned is dig ging a hole in the ground for a dugout believe mé I can ‘certain ly dig one big enough for me mighty quick. Time and space will not per mit me to write more, so I. will change the subject. Yes I hear from B every”. once in a while. Today I received a letter from Miss Cox. It is really bad that you cannot hear from _me ‘but it is not my fault. You have enroute several letters. My time is just now valuable as it is time for chow. So I am going to close with love to all. our brother, Pvt. George Hopper, Co. L143 Inft. A. ‘P.O. 706... A. BE; K
