The present-day fans look upon Honus Wagner and Larry Lajoie as the most ancient of ancients in baseball. While these boys have been ca-rorting the diamond green for many moons, yet they are school kids when compared to some of the players of the past. For instance, look at the baseball career of a certain James O’Rourke, who played the outfield and was at one time the star catcher of the New York Giants. O’Rourke’s official record began in the year 1876; that is, his major league record. For seventeen seasons after that the Orator, as O'Rourke was called, was a star in the big show, and for sixteen years Hon. James was a central figure in the Connecticut State league. He played in several positions, and one season his son played on the team the Orator managed. So for thirty-three seasons James O’Rourke reported for duty every spring in the pink of condition. Then we have Uncle Adrian Anson, who for twenty-six seasons blossomed out with the same old defi that he had the pennant already cinched. The big chief made good his predictions on many occasions. Then came Jack Glasscock, the king of all shortstops, and old Eagle Eye Beckley, two players who wrere no springers when they started in the game, and when theyCap Anson.passed out of it they were old and a very much battered pair of veterans. Both saw thirty-five years of very active and hard campaigning. William (Kid) Gleason, well known to all fans of this period, put in twenty-five seasons of very active and aggressive ball playing. George Van Haltren, Jess Burkett and Billy Hamilton have all seen more seasons on the diamond than the big Frenchman or John Honus Wagner. Some hurlers have RtnveH
