They are tied up except when the ships require coaling. That calls for towing them to a coal pier—because they have not a sufficient number of men on board to operate.Except for tiie shifting to take on coal,, and the use of the veteran Latrobe for eight excursions during the past summer for wards of the Free Summer Excursion Society, the ships have seen no service recently.Several months ago they were lowed to a shipyard, hauled into a drydock for inspection of underwater surfaces and then painted prior to being dropped buck into their natural element.prow to dear ice from about wharves and slips in the harbor.
