Williams, West Virginia peace officer, died Thursday in a Blue, field hospital from the effects of a self-inflicted bullet wound, occurring a few hours after he had been bonded to appear before Magistrate E. N. Hahn, Boone, to answer a charge of criminally assaulting a married wOman d of this city, the alleged crime having been committed during the early days of November. The officer contended the charge was a frame-up.The body was taken to Hickory, N. C.. Saturday for burial. His mother resides in that city. The officer is survived by a widow and three sons.Odd Story Published The suicide of Williams and the arrest which is alleged to have precipitated self-destruction, brought out a remarkable story of the underworld, and provides connection between thi. city and the shady side of metropolitan centers. The story of the case as published in The Princeton Observer, follows:The story, if true, presented one of the most fantastic bits of criminal history in the country.Williams was arrested some few days ago by Trooper SpruiLin of the State police upon request of Sheriff Bowling and North Carolina authorities. He was charged with a criminal assault upon a Mrs. Eleanor Crane, wife of Gentry Crane, of Boone Township, North Carolina, on No\ember 1. A half-sister of this woman. Mrs. Crane. is Goldie May Adkins, of Maple Springs, N. C.This Adkins woman has given a statement to officers outlining her criminal history during the last eight years or since she left North Carolina. She has given intimate details of her life at Bishop where she met Officer Williams.About 1924. she loft North Caiolina for Detroit, went into the cabaret business. purchasing a place for $:54.000 which gangsters gave her.
