It rendered one speechless, especially during the Luminaria ceremonyI parked my car in the front lot cm High Street and could sec that the groups who set up camps throughout the fairgrounds had switched on their rope lights and Christmas lights That was impressive. As I walked toward the main part of the fairgrounds. I could see the Luminaria (white lunch bags) all brightly lit. and lining the curb, which travels all around the fairgrounds road clear up to and around the Armory. As I walked, alone, and looked at the hags with handwritten messages on them. I could actually feel their spirits pull at my heart I really felt the pressure. There are no words that you can say. The flickering lights were the words. The event isn’t sad. except for the realization of what so many arc going through nght now. in as much as the message was about hope, reaching out and fighting cancer The stories were wrenching, but most were about survival. It's about living and reaching out to others.I brought my mother into this event this year. Last year I had just had kidney surgery and wasn’t feeling up to the activity. My mother recently moved to Auburn from Sutter Creek and is a cancer survivor. She is now 85 and thriving! We have been deliveredEspecially when it comes to cancer.I now know that giving testimony about personal battles may help to save even one life That's what it’s about. If we can help jusl one person to realize that it’s ok to reach out. tell their story, gel that examination from their doctor and take control of their lives, I think we can help so many more. Aug. 19, Dan Dove’s accusal of Clinton and Kerry of undermining” intelligence by supporting budget reductions is completely without foundationThe writer is correct when he states that the war on terror is multi-facetcd and will last a long time. But then he proceeds to ask if we should alkiw terrorist nations like Iran and Nwth Korea to threaten our existence. Setting aside the assumption he makes, stated proposing down-thc line that we also make preemptive strikes on these countries.Mr. Dove’s sentiments carry more than a hint that patriotism requires unyielding agreement with the government. He is entitled to that view, however contrary to our nation’s Constitutional principles, but he should know that among those who opposed going to war in Iraq was Gen Anthony Zinni (ret.), former Marinein good company.A final note: On Aug. 19th retiring GOP Congressman Doug Bcreutcr. who originally backed Bush, now says that he sees the war as unjustified and that the situation there has deteriorated into “a dangerous, costly mess.” By the way. the congressman has been serving as vice chair of the House Intelligence CommitteeGilbert H. VMra ColfaxElectoral college not port of true democracyEvery four years I am reminded of one of the major llaws in our democracy the electoral college system.Under this system, a candidate who wins a state like Florida by 250 votes gets all of Florida’s electoral votes. This effectively disenfranchises all those who voted for the losing candidate in that state. In a state like California (where one candidate is perceived as far ahead), many don’t even bother to vote because the “wmncr-takc-all system has effectively disenfranchised everyone. Our views in the presidential election have been made irrelevant.Already three times in our nation's history, the candidate with the most total votes has lost. This is as undemocratic as one can get!Other countries in the world (such as Peru and Bangladesh) are centuries ahead of us. with their recognition of the one person, one vote” system. I’m
