Mineral Is Found In Georgia and North Carolina. VALUE AS AN ABRASIVE It is the Hardest Mineral Known to Seivice Except the Diamond—Ite Market Value In Twice that of Emery. Wansasxacox, Aug. 3.—The geologi cal survey has issued a report on the occurrence and distribution of coran dum in the United States. It shows considerable activity in corandum min ing in the last few year. Several new finds in quantity have been brought to light, particularly in Ontario, where the corandum occurs in a syenite, and in North Carolina and Georgia in a gneiss or a quartz cist. Except in Montana the corandum in the United States is limited to the Appalachian chain, and its mining has been confined to Northeastern Georgian and South western North Carolina, except for the emery mines at Chester. Its great value as an abrasive lies in the fact that next to the diamond, it is the hardest mineral known to science. Its occurrences are of much greater variety than formerly supposed. While the large concentrated masses are still confined to the basic magnesia rocks, corundum is scattered in small quanti ties through a number of other rocks and in the aggregate exists in large quantity. “During the past few years, says the report, “North Carolina is the only state that has produced any corundum and Massachusetts and New York the only ones which have produced any emery. The mining of the former the past year has been very much less than of the latter, although its market value is twice that of emery and there is a large demand for the well inclined com mercial product. The reason for the discrepancy is that the better deposits have been tied up and imperfectly cleaned product has been put on the market and other minerals have been substituted for this one.
