Gillette, or Flandreau. whose death In a Dell Rapids hospital Is announced, had the distinction of being the oldest man In South Dakota to volunteer in the military service of the country, his ago being 63.He enlisted in the army at Pipestone, Minn., last winter and was sent to 6t. Louie, where he was assigned to duty in the engineering corps as a truck driver. He became 111 shortly after his arrival at St. Louis and was sent to the hospital, where he underwent operations for intestinal troubles. Following the operations he failed to regain his strength and recontly was given an honorable discharge from the military service. Ho returned to his South Dakota home, and had been there only a few days when it was deemed necessary for him to submit to another operation. From the effects of this he failed to rally.He is survived by a widow and daughter and two sons, who reside in Mineapolis. He was one of the early' pioneers of Moody county, having located In the county in the early 70s. His greatest worry during the last weeks of his life was that his physical condition prevented him from doing his ••bit'* for Uncle Sam.—4—
