W. J. Bryan hired a hall in Chi cago for the sole purpose of mak ing a speech to denounce the platform adopted by the New York Democrats in their recent convention. The St. Louis con vention must either make a plat form to suit Bryan’s view—large ly modeled after the Kansas City cardinal canons—and must place on that production a man in de clared sympathy with every avowal or hce—William Jennings Bryan, twice candidate for presi dent, recipient of the largest pop ular vote ever received by one of his party faith—will none of it. He will bolt, and, in the ebullient nature of the man, we may be sure he will not be quiescent in the campaign. The Nebraskan cannot sulk in his tent. He is constitutionally unable to keep still. Who will be his independ ent candidate? It cannot be that the easterners at St. Louis will yield to this dictation as they did in Kansas City four years ago. Will it be Hearst or—— Bryan himself?
