Lawrence K. Barefield, who had been deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff's office since 1973, was killed in a stabbing at a bar in Port Lavaca. Charged with murder in the incident which occured at about 6:30 p.m. at Leonard's Bar was Clarence Rodgers, 30 of Corpus Christi. He gave himself up to sheriff's officers at about 8:20 p.m. A hearing was held before Justice of the Peace Frank Kelly at 8:50 p.m. Rodgers, who is formerly of Calhoun County, is now being held at the county jail without bail. Barefield, who was off duty at the time of the stabbing, was a graduate of Wilkins High School, a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran. Funeral services for Barefield will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with the Rev. J.C. Pullam officiating. Burial will be in the Port Lavaca Cemetery. The Brefield Green Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Barefield Green Funeral Home. Born Jan. 17, 1931, Barefield was the son of Mrs. Raymond Barefield and the late Mr. Barefield of Long Mott. Survivors include his wife, Martha; two sons, Wilford Burns and L.D. Jr., a student at Howard Payne College; his mother, of Port Lavaca, five sisters, Mrs. Willard Hall, Mrs. Ora Williams, Mrs. Dorothy Clay, all of Port Lavaca, Mrs. Radie Barefield of Beeville, and Mrs. Dora Barefield of Kentucky; two brothers, Dennis, of California and Bobby Joe, of Port Lavaca. A memorial fund has been established for Lawrence K. Barefield at the First National Bank for those who wish to contribute in lieu of flowers. Pallbearers will be John Sexton, Mason Askew, Mike Gibson, Jim Simmons, Chester Williams, Clarence Leonard, Willie Harris and John Watts. Honrary pallbearers will be members of the Calhoun County Sheriff's office.
