NAU Begins FM Broadcasting■■MBMM^»There’s a New Sound in FlagstaffRadio listeners looking for educational programming without advertising will have a pleasant surprise next Friday as Flagstaff’s second FM station begins regular programming, Affiliatc-d with Northern Arizona University’s Department of Speech, the station svi 11 offer a program format aimed at educational entertainment and enlightenment and will present tapes of such favorites as the British Broadcasting Corporation's World Theater.And there will be easy and classical listening periods each weekday night from 8:30 to 9:55. The Art Buchwa 1lt;I Show will be another popular presentation heard twice each weekday at 6:30 and 10 p.m.Licensed to operate in the Flagstaff area at 88.5 on the FM dial, the station will offer, advanced radio students a chance to gain professional experience while continuing studies. The university also sponsors an AM station, KNAU, a carrier-current station heard only on campus.Station personel promise that the few rough spots heard during their week of test programming will be ironed on I as the regular schedule takes effect and station KAXR is back on the air.Reception should be good In the downtown area and receivers with a spear ate antenna will pull In a strong signal in the East Flagstaff area, staff radio-television engineer Eugene D, Bradley reports.Eventually the station^ hopes to increase its power, now at 10 watts, to be able to reach as far as 50 miles from the campus. The transmitter now in use was donated by Phoenix College several years ago when they made the Jump to highe* power.The modern studios were completed last February and include Ike newest RCA equipment. The control room houses an 8-chaimol audio cousulc with three tape decks, two turntables, and two cartridge tape players. An adjoining studio will accommodate a small orchestra and other dra malic groups.Since completion, (he facility has produced the sound track for all theater productions.Working closely with the Flagstaff Public Schools, some programming may in the forseable future be produced in cooperation with school district officials and biuadcast to area schools. Power becomes a problem will] the arrangement, however, the double-bay antenna sitting on top the newly-finished Creative Arts Center is radiating an effective 80 watts.
