All news ( sports) good news at WEOL«j8it MonrmsfiThaChronide-TetegtamELYRIA—Listeners of a local radio station are hearing a new tone,WEOL-AM 930 has switched its format to focus on news during the day and sports at night, dropping music from its play list The new format started Nov. 24.“to the information age, we’ve just gone onto the next level,” said Mike Whitmore, WEOL’e program director. “In this dayand age, information is all aroundm”The station’s hallmark for many years has been its news and sports forecasts. This year, the station won ll state awards for those broadcasts, Whitmore said.What we have learned over the hist few years is the days of people listening to music on AM radio are feding,” he said. “We never were a music station.” Whitmore also hosts the station’s morning program as MikeJames.Whitmore said the station will continue to have news broadcasts every hour and half-hour. It also will continue to carry its regular features, such as Paul Harvey news and the “Backyard Beat” with Charles Behnke, horticultural agent for the Ohio State University Extension.it also is staying with sports broadcasts like high school sports, Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Lumberjacks, Whitmoresaid.Some of the new things include:- Updates of local news at about IS and 45 minutes after each hour.* Adding the “One-On-One” sports show, a national call-in show at night that allows listeners to talk to sports experts.* Adding the Associated Press to its national and worldSeeWE01,05
