Orono Fair Celebrates Record Exhibits Despite Missing Midway

The Orono Fair drew a near record crowd and larger gate receipts than 1956, with standout displays in crafts, horticulture, and cattle. Midway rides were absent, disappointing children, while harness racing, music by the Orono Band, and a strong heavy horse show highlighted the event. Dr. R Percy Vivian opened the 1957 Craze Fair.

W A Meeting at Orono United Church Notes September Session

The first WJM.S. meeting after holidays convened in the Orono United Church Sunday School room on September 16 with Mrs. Drummond presiding. The session opened with a devotional, hymn singing, and prayers led by Mrs. Drummond and Mrs. W. E. Armstrong. Armstrong spoke on Romans from prison in Philippi, stressing constant prayer for co workers and followers. The group discussed Acts chapter 16 and minutes from the July meeting, with Armstrong presenting the treasurer’s report. The October gathering will be led by group 2, and the Autumn Thankoffering is planned for November with Miss Amy Schauffler as guest speaker.

Peterborough Group Stages Knox United Theatre Evening

Knox United Church Theatre Group from Peterboro presented one act plays and sketches in Orono on Friday September 6. Under director Peter McComb the troupe featured Orange Blossoms with Freda Foster and Dorothy Falconer plus Margot McComb and Bob Atchinson. Two brief comedies followed and concluded with A Marriage Has Been Arranged starring Sonia Donaldson and Roger Davis. The event was sponsored by the Orono Agricultural Society and included entertainment by Doug Lycett and Jim Gamsby.

Orone 5 Waterdown 2 in replay series opener

Orone baseball defeated Waterdown 5 to 2 in the first game of the replay series. Keith West pitched a nine inning four hit effort with five strikeouts and two walks. He also drew three walks and hit a three base hit. Dean West and Junior West added two for four each to push the victory aided by two errors from Waterdown.

Newtonville Wins South Durham Championship

Newtonville captured the South Durham Baseball league title with a 13 to 3 victory over Welcome on Thursday, sealing the series four games to two. The win advances Newtonville to face Omemee for the county championship. Terry Lane pitched five innings for the victors, with Phil Gilmer, Garnie Harris, and Long John Holman supporting on the mound.

Orono Fair Prize Winners at Durham Central Agricultural Fair

Oddfellows and Rebekahs Hall Draw and Dance Oct 19 1957

The Oddfellows and Rebekahs Hall Trustees sponsor a Draw and Dance at their hall on Saturday evening October 19 1957 with eight prizes including a doll Sunbeam Mixmaster toaster electric razor fly rod and reel a 22 rifle a wool blanket and apples. Proceeds go to the building fund for the hall which serves the village and district. The article notes hall improvements a refrigerator purchase and an outstanding debt of 800 sought from public donations to clear the loan and buy 100 chairs for 200 seating then decorate and waterproof the hall walls.

Orono Takes 2-0 Lead in Lakeshore Playoff

Orono Intermediates outscored Port Hope 5 to 3 to take a 2-0 series lead in the Lakeshore League Championship. Car man Cornish sparked the offense with two singles and a double in four trips, while Dean West and Keith West added three for four. Keith West earned the win with seven hits, three strikeouts and four walks as Port Hope’s Mike Harrison took the loss.

Orono Waterdown OBA Playoff Replayed After Protest

The Ontario Baseball Association ordered a full restart of the Orono vs Waterdown OBA series after ruling out the prior games. Crono’s victory was voided, Ham Boyd was banned for the season, and Orono paid 50 to remain in the series. The reset begins with a best two of three, game two set for Saturday at Orono Community Park at 3 p.m.

Clarke Township Council Rejects Public School Withdrawals

The Clarke Township Council meets with most members present as it rejects the Department of Education’s withdrawal of three school sections from the Clarke Township Public School Area. It notes opposition and warns of possible future reconsideration in 1958 while addressing road, inspection, and by law matters.
