The Orono Fair returns this weekend with hoped for record attendance. Opening events include Friday and Saturday dramatic contests in Town Hall, plus two one act plays each night. Exhibits cover dairy beef, needlework and fruit, with poultry sheep and swine on display and grandstand entertainment by Oreno and Bowmanville bands.
Bowmanville Whitby and Bowmanville prep to switch to a continent wide numbering system this Sunday September 26. The Bell Telephone Company of Canada offers new plates for old numbers while long distance dialing becomes direct nos. In Bowmansville four digit numbers will gain Market 85 prefix turning 1234 into Market 383 1234 and 567 into Market 83 5567.
Clarke Township council meets with Reeve A McKay and members to approve buying the Orono Armoury for 4500 dollars with a 900 dollar down payment and 3600 dollar mortgage. The meeting covers building frontage limits, road allowances, highway repairs, game licensing, and 1954 expenditures including new truck and gravel work.
James Stanley McLean a Durham county native rose from a $12-a-week bookkeeper to president of Canada Packers after a 1927 merger. He built a national network of eight plants and multiple facilities across Canada and the United States. He died of a heart attack at his Bayview Avenue mansion. Surviving: wife Edith Flavelle, a son, two daughters, seven grandchildren. He funded youth and hosted English evacuee children during WWII.
The 1954 Migratory Bird Seasons for the Lindsay District cover Haliburton Victoria Peterborough Durham and Northumberland counties from September 18 to December 15. Hunters may pursue migratory birds within these dates under provincial regulations.
The Afternoon Auxiliary of the W M S met in the church at 2 30 pm with 27 members. Mrs Drummond led worship and several members presented devotional readings while Miss Arlene Rainey reported on the Whitby School for Leaders and Dr Winnifred Bryce on India. A library update added 12 India themed books and a Sectional Rally is planned for Tyrone Church October 5 with a bus arranged. The next meeting is October 7. Duck hunting limits are listed for the Ontario season with various daily bag and possession quotas.
The Orono Fair presents a two night drama festival September 10-11 with two one act plays each evening, tap and ballet numbers, vocal and musical acts, and adjudication by Mrs. Harvey Armitage. Friday features Crono’s dramatic group with The Best Cure and Three Bright Girls. Saturday showcases Peter McCombe and Lakefield entries The Inside Trick. Admission 50c and 25c.
Orono public school enrollment rose this opening day with 120 pupils, the same as last year, while the high school added 38 students to reach 95 across four grades. District pupils come from Lake Shore Newtonville Port Granby Kendal and nearby areas. Principal Goheen and staff note the largest year total in years with grades led by grade nine at 49.
Orono hosts Apple Day this Saturday September 11 observed by the local Boy Scout organization. Cub Pack members will bring apples with plans for broad community support to boost Scouting. Funds raised will support both Cubs and general Scouting activities.
The new Durham County Sale Arena, located a half mile west of Orono, opens Monday September 13 at 7 pm. Owner Jack Reid will serve as auctioneer as the two area facility includes pens for 700 pigs and 200 cattle, a 350-seat ring, open market for producer price setting, and government inspections for all stock and produce.
The South Durham Baseball League opened its final series in Orono with Orono defeating Welcome 11 to 0. Orono capitalized on Welcome errors in the first inning and held the lead as Raye West starred with three hits including a home run, while Keith West pitched seven strikeouts.
