The Orono Fair opens Friday with Mrs. F. A. Lackley officiating at 4 00 PM. The event runs Friday and Saturday featuring exhibits from Domestic Science to garden produce and a Black and White Holstein cattle show. Sky-Liner Trio, bands, gym displays, harness racing, show horses, and a Dramatic Contest at Township Hall light the weekend.
Orono Fair announces new exhibitors for the Domestic Science section with no entry fee for 650. Cake iced awards offer cash prizes 1st 3.00 2nd 2.00 3rd 1.00 4th 1.00. Donations from Dominion Store Bowmanville 10.00 and Mc Gregor's Hardware 5.00 fund Luncheon Plate for 2 and New Exhibitors prizes due to an omission in the prize list.
Orono Public School opened with 121 pupils in three rooms and new features like redecoration and fire escapes. High School enrollment reached 91, with plans to grow to about 99. grades 9 10 12 travel to Bowmanville for some courses. Staff include Principal W W Watt and teachers Miss Barr, Miss King, and Mr Rutherford, with expanded commercial options and added typing and business practice.
Silas D. Souch dies after a lengthy illness at his Orono home on August 15 1955 born May 23 1875 on the Darlington Clarke town line son of Charles and Mrs Souch married Jennie Patterson November 12 1913 they farmed before moving to Orono nine years ago Heber Souch his brother survives United Church member for over thirty years funeral August 18 1955 at Orono United Church Rev J Kitchen officiating pallbearers listed interment at Orono Cemetery.
Mrs. Jas. Lycett on Main Street transformed an eyesore dumping ground into a colorful garden. Her green thumb and church involvement earn commendation for making Orone a better place to live and a model neighbor.
The W M S met on Tuesday afternoon September 6 with Mrs. M H Staples presiding. Seventeen members attended and 73 calls were recorded. Treasurer’s report showed 283.04 sent to the Presbytery. prayers were offered for Angola partners and for lepers as letters described church growth there.
Eric Carleton of the Orono squadron won the Junior Track and Field Championship at the training period, besting over two hundred cadets. The Orono unit, formed in 1954 with 45 cadets, aimed to boost enrollment and performance as it prepares to host more cadets and resumes weekly parades and rifle range activities.
The Anglican Church Sunday School of the Air reaches 1 000 000 weekly across 30 stations from Ak lavil to St Johns. From CFRB at 9 30 am it promotes home religious training for 40 000 members and disabled or remote children. The program marks fifty years of church radio instruction and plans a new session in September.
Rexine Thompson Pixie daughter of Rex and Mrs Thompson of Victoria Park Toronto won nine firsts in upper school exams. She plans to enter Toronto University this fall and already earned the University of Toronto Scholarship for Greek and Latin and the General Proficiency prize along with several smaller awards.
A couple portrayed by Carolyn Jones and Donald Staples faces a birthday blunder with friends aiding their misstep, then resolving tensions to end happier. Supporting roles include Eleanor Robinson, Jean and Glenn Allin, Ann Best, Louise Verhoeven. Directed by Mrs. Jenny Norton.
R H King Collegiate Scarboro grants scholarships to Pixie and Orone friends. Congratulations poured from the group as the scholars celebrate the achievement and support from peers.
Orono Pee Wee Hardball team swept Oak Ridges in the Ontario playdowns best two out of three. Orono won 21 7 in game one behind Wayne Bailey who pitched and hit a homer, then finished the series 18 4 as Kenny Kennedy earned the win. Donnie Lycett Wayne Bailey and Kenny Kennedy led the offense for Orono. Oak Ridges scored in the third fifth and sixth innings.
