Peterboro County Wins County Herd At Orono Holstein Show

Holstein champions from Ontario's districts gathered in Orono for the Championship Show. Judges ranked 115 head from Peterboro, Durham, Northumberland, Victoria, Hastings, Lennox and Addington with Peterboro taking top county honors and Northumberland second.

Judge German's Car Recovered in Trenton Heist

A car stolen Wednesday evening by a man who borrowed it to reach near Trenton was found the next day in Trenton. The thief, claiming he only borrowed it to travel quickly, left a typewritten note from Cobourg police stating he ran out of gas and gave no address.

Reform schools eyed for return by Ontario government

At a dinner honoring Hon. George Dunbar Ontario provincial secretary he stated the government seeks the return of two provincial juvenile reform schools for boys and girls. Bowmanville boys camp now a prisoner of war site and Galt girls camp used by the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. Premier Drew and John Bracken attended. Dunbar urged discipline in schools and society to curb youth crime and justify reopening the facilities.

Red Cross News from Orono Branch Reports Plans

The October meeting of the Red Cross of the Orono Branch was held Thursday afternoon. Committees are忙 planning overseas boxes and a Christmas bazaar. Quilting remains popular and tops for quilts are needed soon to support ongoing projects.

Women’s Association Meeting at Park St Church

The October meeting of the Women’s Association of Park St Church drew good attendance. Mrs. Tamblyn welcomed members and read a message from the Dominion Board. Mrs. Smith receives thanks for her service and plans to spend winter at Niagara Falls.

McCreas Work to Begin Shingling Church This Week

McCreas Church will start shingling this week. Miss Cora Perry of Toronto visited Mr and Mrs George White over the weekend. Robbie Youngman, son of Mr and Mrs Ed Youngman, injured his arm and lost several teeth in a fall. Anniversary and Think-Offering Service set for Sunday October 17 at 2 30 pm with Rev S Littlewood of Orono as speaker and Kirby choir providing special music.

The Newcastle Ball Club will host a dance in the Community Hall this Thursday evening October 14. Russ Creighton and His Dance Band perform with tap dancing songs and banjo selections for 50c per person. Come enjoy a pleasant evening.

Kirby Anniversary Services at Kirby United Church

The Kirby United Church held anniversary services on Sunday October 10 with strong attendance. The church was decorated and the day featured joyful music and a spirit of Thanksgiving. Rev J E Griffith preached in the afternoon from Try joy before thee and Rev R E Morton led the evening service with a Psalm based message. Visitors joined from Orono and other areas.

Ford Car Found In Toronto By Local Man

Mr. Harry Mercer's Ford V-8 sedan was found in Toronto at noon last Thursday by a local man, not police. Mr. O'Boyle, in the city on business from Oshawa, spotted the car on Winchester and Sumatch streets and reported it to city police. The Police notified Provincial Police who took charge of the vehicle. The car remains in Toronto.

Wartime Prices Board Revises Poultry Price Rules in Canada

Ottawa notes revised regulations on maximum live and dressed poultry prices across Canada. The order raises wholesale dressed poultry by 2 cents per pound and cuts retailer mark ups to a 20 percent cap not to exceed 7 cents per pound, with consumer ceilings also rising.

Clarke Township Council Sets 1943 Tax Collector and Bills

Clarke Township Council met October 5 in Orono. C. F. Awde reported 1942 tax collections with $2,576.76 uncollected, the lowest in years, and was reappointed tax collector for 1943. Dog caused sheep killings led to $168 in bills, totaling $1,145 paid in 1943. Numerous town expenses approved including salaries, supplies, and Road Voucher No. 9 for $2,789.94.
