Durham Central Agricultural Society Poised to Net $300 from Fair

The Durham Central Agricultural Society reports 2600 tickets sold at the gate, down $175 in receipts due to a 10 cent admission cut, offset by crowds at a dance and concert. About 150 exhibitors entered, horse classes expanded, livestock steady, while main building exhibits fell short, with a projected year end surplus of around $300 and prize payments imminent.

Cobourg Training School Nearing Full Operation

Cobourg welcome twenty girls from Galt marks the move of the Girls' Training School to the east town site. The McCook residence now serves as the new institution with furnaces installed. Superintendent Miss L Charleson leads a skilled staff of teachers and matronly aides.

Canada Extends Call for 19-Year-Olds in Wartime Draft

War Services Minister Thorson announced a September 30 proclamation extending compulsory military service to 19 year olds and aliens within callable ages. About 107000 nineteen year olds and 30000 aliens become liable, with many unfit or already in service reducing actual enlistment. The move aligns Canada with U S rules and, for the first time, includes non British aliens in the mobilization plan.

Red Cross Bazaar Plans in Orono for December

At the October Orono Branch meeting plans were made for fall activities and a December Christmas bazaar. Donations for overseas boxes will be gathered later with a community drive, while sewing and knitting support is encouraged at Mrs H Dean's and the work room. Bills totaled 23.25 and the treasurer reported a balance of 500.62 with 175.18 spent on work room materials.

Clarke Township Council Minutes October 6 1942

Clarke Township Council met October 6 with all members present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The clerk was instructed to handle correspondence and attend a convention in Toronto on October 15 and 16. Tax collection report noted remaining balance 3238.55. Various by laws and resolutions adopted. Bills paid include J. J. Mellor salary and other town expenses. Council adjourned to November 2, 1942.

Dance at Newcastle Community Hall Thursday October 8

The Board of Management of Newcastle Community Hall will hold a dance on Thursday October 8 commencing at 9 00 p m in the Community Hall. Russ Creighton and his artists will provide the music. Admission is 50c per person.

Kirby W.M.S. Service Held Last Wednesday

The Kirby Women's Missionary Society conducted a thank offering service on the preceding Wednesday. In parliamentary notes, Prime Minister Churchill stated in the British House of Commons that during the Dieppe raid Canadians suffered 3350 casualties out of 5000 involved, with tank barriers creating heavy losses.

Widow of W Fred Holdaway Rites Held in Orono

Mrs Leta Althea Pearl Hancock Holdaway, former Orono girl, died at Cochrane in her 41st year. Born January 15, 1920 in Kirby, she trained as a nurse at Bowmanville and worked in Orono and Pennsylvania before marrying W Fred Holdaway on August 20 1929. She leaves her husband two sons Marvin and MacGregor a daughter Mildred her parents six brothers and one sister. Funeral was at her parents home September 30 with Rev S Little wood Shaving in charge. Interment Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers were six brothers Victor Harold Robert Bruce Marlow and Glen.

Mrs Drummond Speaks at Kirby United Church Autumn Offering

Mrs A A Drummond was guest speaker at Kirby United Church Woman's Missionary Society Autumn Thanksgiving Offering on October 7. The program included a London air raid shelter reading, a child development article, and a stewardship address emphasizing Christians as trustees.

Former Orono Resident Fraser Little Dies in Regina

Fraser Little 62, a Regina resident and former Orono boy, died suddenly. He managed a Regina store, served on the War Time Prices and Trade Board, and is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter, three brothers William, Robert, Alfred, and two sisters Mary and Jessie Ann, all of Orono. Funeral held Monday in Regina.
