Furniture Plant Destroyed By Blaze In Newcastle
Fire destroyed the south plant of Woodland Products in Newcastle, a furniture manufacturer. Damage is estimated at 50 000 dollars with forty employees out of work. Fire started after 6 p m in the spray booth and spread quickly due to lack of local hydrants. Police and neighboring departments from Orono and Bowmanville fought the blaze, supplying water from a stream and hydrants half a mile away. The firm operates a second plant in Newcastle and plans to reassign some workers as operations shift.
