Medical Services Advancements Highlight Local Co op Meeting

The sixth armugal Durham County Co op Medical Services meeting was held in Blackstock on November 18 with a turkey banquet. President Mrs. Howard Malcolm led catering, as Paul Meehan spoke on federation progress and 710 members on the Medical Plan, 240 on the Surgical Plan, noting 84 cents returned per dollar.

Orono Orphans Power Past Port Hope Redmen In Lakeshore Clash

The Orono Orphans defeated Port Hope Redmen 6 to 2 on Wednesday and 8 to 3 on Saturday in Lakeshore League hockey. D West K West and Armstrong starred with multiple goals while Hooper secured key saves and the defense limited Port Hope’s scoring opportunities. About seven hundred fans attended the two matches.

Nomination day for Clarke township and Orono village police village invites taxpayers to review the year’s work and provide input for the year ahead. The second Card Party of L O L No 409 was held Tuesday night November 17 with a fine time. Competition for scores is keen as members vie for the 3rd and final party Monday November 30 at 8 p.m. The grand prize will be presented that night. Orono Police Trustees Discuss Regional Fire Protection Plan

The Orono Police Trustees met to discuss forming a regional fire protection group with Cobourg Port Hope Newcastle and Bowmanville to share resources during emergencies. Fire costs for the year and required tanks were reviewed. a fire tank shed will be built behind the hall. Discussion also covered broken street lights and enforcement, incorporation petitions, hydro bills, and a small net profit reinvested into the system.

Oshawa City council will not fund a 700000 civic arena to replace the fire damaged structure. Mayor John Naylor urged service clubs industries and others to raise funds while noting city commitments are already high. The 500000 arena was destroyed on September 15 and a public vote on rebuilding had been considered.

John Tamblyn And June Wood Gold Medalists In Speaking

Seven contestants competed for the Gold Medal at a Sunday School Auditorium event in the United Church Orono. June Wood and John Tamblyn, both from Orono, won the Gold Medal among three girls and four boys, during a program that included hymns, prayers, solos, and prize presentations.

Athletic Association To Operate Rink For The Season

Orono Amateur Athletic Association Directors meet to decide rink operation for the coming season. With $204 donated by 37 supporters, funds are short. A season ticket plan sets $3 for a child or $5+ for multiple children, tickets usable for a future program. Sealed tenders due by December 5 to James Rickaby or R. C. Worcester. Donations listed total $204.00.

Ontario penal reform panel seeks women’s group support

At the suggestion of Ontario’s Department of Reform Institutions the Penal Reform for Women Joint Committee completes an intensive study of prison conditions. They propose more women probation officers and a separate facility for earlier reform, alcohol treatment, offender classification, and other reforms. The committee offers free speakers across Ontario to any women’s organization to hear the recommendations and asks groups to request visits.

The Fifty Bushel Winter Wheat Cup spanned 14 Ontario counties under Maple Leaf Milling and Ontario Agriculture. Top ten finalists share cash awards with 33 contestants, judged on seed appearance weight and disease resistance among other tests, with results announced at the Royal Winter Fair.

Fire destroys home of Campkin family on Leskard road

A Thursday afternoon blaze on the Leskard road north of Hamilton's Corners totally destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Campkin and their two children. A grease flare from the stove started the fire which the Orono fire brigade could not stop. a baby carriage and a few toys were saved. A barn nearby remained intact as residents organized aid and a three room dwelling was improvised in the barn.
