At the suggestion of Ontario’s Department of Reform Institutions the Penal Reform for Women Joint Committee completes an intensive study of prison conditions. They propose more women probation officers and a separate facility for earlier reform, alcohol treatment, offender classification, and other reforms. Fire destroys home of Campkin family on Leskard road
A Thursday afternoon blaze on the Leskard road north of Hamilton's Corners totally destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Campkin and their two children. A grease flare from the stove started the fire which the Orono fire brigade could not stop. a baby carriage and a few toys were saved. A barn nearby remained intact as residents organized aid and a three room dwelling was improvised in the barn.
