Orono Chamber Plans Annual Santa Claus Parade Revival

The Orono Chamber of Commerce held a meeting with twelve members present to discuss projects including a Santa Claus parade and support for local events. They heard updates on UNICEF fundraising, fire protection improvements, and proposed equipment needs for the Orono Fire Department, with further actions to be considered by year’s end.

The Orono CGLT held a regular meeting in the Sunday School Auditorium on November 9 1959. Eleven girls attended as Deanna Challice and Shirley Sharon led devotion and the hymn Father We Thank Thee.

Girl Guides Meeting Recap and Patrol Leader Update

The Tuesday Guide meeting began at 7 30 with roll call and 23 members present. Susie Major became Patrol Leader of the Poppie Patrol after a reader stopped attending. Several girls earned the new Guide Building fund donation and many passed laws promise and motto while others received instruction on the Nurse Badge.

Memorial Service In Orono Honors Remembrance Day

In Orono the Bowmanville Branch of the Canadian Legion and ex service personnel joined Orono Cubs Guides and others for a Remembrance Day service at the United Church. A wreath parade to the Cenotaph preceded the ceremony with Last Post and two minute silence.

WMS Fall Thank-Offering Hosts Guest Speaker

Mrs Romeris spoke at the Orono United Church auditorium for the Orono WMS fall thank offering gathering. About 60 members and guests from nearby churches attended a program of worship music and prayer ending with a social hour.

Seventeenth Blue Ribbon Shorthorn Sale Tops at $670

The Seventeenth Annual Blue Ribbon Shorthorn Sale at Blackstock reached $670 for a cow and calf. The top priced cow, graded Triple A, was consigned by H. D. Millson of Oshawa and bought by Rey Philp of Port Hope, with the calf going to Nyle Bristow of Port Hope. Top bull price was $510, a grandson of Cairossie Prefect, consigned by Clarence Duggan of Brechin and sold to Arthur McKay of Newtonville.

Recreation Plan Organizing In Orono Community Group

The Orono Recreation Committee held its inaugural meeting to elect officers for the coming year. Officers include Arnold Wallace as chairman N F Porter treasurer and R J Taggart secretary with additional members Armstrong Barlow Walkey and Savery. The group discussed government grants for instructors rent and operation costs and plan to consult the Department on procedures. An art class proposal by Donald Staples was presented and a local art meeting is set for Friday evening at the Municipal Building.

Durham Central Fair expansion eyed for Orono with new features

At a Norfolk County meeting in Orono organizers discussed extending the Durham Central Fair to Friday in 1960 adding attractions and a Cooking School display. Dane Found would back prize money and oversee concessions with Midway. A pony show tractor contest and Tobacco Association displays were proposed amid parking space concerns.
