Orono Girls Beat Newtonville by Ten Runs on Opening Night
Orono girls softball opened their season with a 25 to 15 victory over Newtonville before about 200 fans. Alice Crono and Gwen Jones homered for Newtonville while Orono tallied 15 hits and pulled ahead with a 13 run first inning and a 4 run sixth. Enid Middleton and Donna West worked on the mound for the hosts with Stark handling Newtonville pitching.

Lionel A. Dent veteran North West Rebellion fighter and longtime Toronto police sergeant died Monday May 27 1946 in Cochrane at age 82. He moved from Orono to his son’s home in Cochrane and leaves five sons Arthur Robert Gordon Walter George Ernest three daughters Ina Eva and Mrs L C Mason. Funeral at McDougall and Brown Danforth Ave Toronto May 29 8 pm with interment in Orono Cemetery Thursday morning.

On Friday May 24 Dr. W W Sherwin and Mr M W Staples showed Jersey cattle at Brooklin Spring Fair. About 100 Jerseys competed with two local breeders claiming many prizes. In the yearling bull class a pair from each herd took 1st and 2nd, with one bull earning Junior and Grand Champion. the brothers also swept other divisions including 1st in the 2-year-old milk class and multiple placings in senior and junior yearlings.

Swine Club Links Rotary Funds to Pigs for Youth
For six years the Boys and Girls Swine Clubs distributed pure bred weanling sows funded by the Bowmanville and Port Hope Rotary clubs. Since 1989 and through the Junior Farmers' Fund, thirty pairs have been provided to eager youths in West and East Durham, with records kept on feed cost and pig management. Notable attendees included Geo Garnet Jordan Baxter and Port Hope editor Crow.
