South Cavan School Board member Walter Steward voices resolve against outside dictates as Millbrook Home and School Association hosts a meeting to present facts on a controversial public school construction plan. Disagreement centers on merging Millbrook and South Cavan areas into one large school with about 12 classrooms.
About 100 residents gathered as Mr Holmes outlined two main proposals to centralize seven area schools into South Cavan and Millbrook. One option builds a 12 room school with a kindergarten and general purpose room at about 18 mills tax. the other a six room South Cavan school at about 19 mills.
P G Newell of Newcastle won the district 14 seat on the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board by 65 votes to 42 over Mac Frew of Port Hope. He succeeds the prior district representative and will join a 15 member board regulating flue-cured tobacco under the Farm Products Marketing Board. Also elected were Ariel de Scheppers of Alliston and Gerard Beaudry of Castleton as committee men.
