Tenders And Delegations Busy Township Council

The Monday bi monthly township council session heard delegations and opened tenders for grader tires and fencing. A $8000 loan for an $13000 pool was discussed with backing by the Orono Park Board and Chamber, while a plan to place the pool under the Community Centres Act was proposed for grant eligibility. The council deferred legal advice and department contact until a Friday follow up and approved further testing for a water well project with $3500 for drilling, subject to trustee approval. Nine building inspector applicants were narrowed to three for interviews.

Health Unit April Report Summary

Northumberland Durham Health Unit reports for April 1960 show 113 communicable disease cases including scarlet fever and chickenpox and one rabies in a dog in Hope township. The tuberculosis case, r.v. immunizations, 81 clinics, 713 home visits, and numerous child health and family health consultations are noted.

Chamber Committee Backs Financing for Orono Park Pool

A Chamber of Commerce committee led by Herb Duvall proposed Park Board assistance to finance a new Orono Park pool. They urged an $8 000 loan backed by both organizations, aim to complete the project this year with 80 000 gallon capacity and dressing rooms included. Representatives will seek council support and prices, while a Community Centres Act plan is advanced for provincial grants.

Speaking Contest Arrangements By Women’s Union May Meeting

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union held its May meeting in the Sunday School Auditorium. The president led hymns, Mrs. H Rowe gave an inspirational devotion on Barnabas, and the business session approved minutes and Treasurer’s report. Medal Contest planned for Friday May 20 at 8 p.m. Mrs J C Tamblyn to present books to contestants. Mrs Kelly read a Peace article.

Audiometer Testing Begins in Elementary Schools

April marks the first full month of audiometer testing in elementary schools since the program's start. Most tested were children previously suspected by public health nurses or teachers of hearing loss, with 285 tests recommended and 69 routine tests completed.

Mothers in the Bible Highlight Orono Church Meeting

The May meeting of the Woman's Association of Orono United Church met May 12 in the S S Auditorium with 12 ladies. Mrs. H. Allen chaired as devotional by Mrs. M J Tamblyn on Mothers in the Bible. The group approved uniting with the W M L for the June meeting and planned a June 29 cold meat and strawberry supper.

Orphans End Season With Successful Banquet

A 2000 strong Toronto crowd at St James Cathedral witnessed 13 candidates ordained priests and 11 deacons including Rev. Dr. Norman Martin of St Anne’s Bewdley. The Orono Orphans hockey club celebrated a season cap with a banquet for over 200, honoring their Ontario junior crown and trophy displays.

Interesting Cast To Present Orono Play

The Orono Players stage a satirical three act comedy The Torch Bearers on May 27 and 28. A 12 member cast led by director Mrs. M. Samuel features local actors from Crono Bowmanville Enniskillen and others. Proceeds support regional summer recreation and boys and girls baseball programs.

Orono Fireworks Display Planned At Fairgrounds

The Orono Chamber of Commerce and Band present a fireworks show at the Orono Fairgrounds on Thursday night May 19 to May 23. Music from 8:00 PM precedes the display with aerial and ground effects. Donations totaling two hundred dollars fund the community project and help complete canvassing of the town.
