Local Talent Sparks Horticulture Variety Night
Jake's Variety Show at the Orono United Church drew strong local support last Saturday. Emcee A Jakeman promoted the event to benefit the Orono Horticultural Society, raising about 28 dollars as performers including Ralph de Jonge Jim Baskerville Bill Arnott Marie Yeo and others entertained with vocal piano and musical acts. The organizer expressed plans for another night to showcase more district talent.

Orono Junior Gardeners Plan Flower Show May 23
Orono Junior Gardeners held an executive meeting at Mrs. J Quinton's home on May 13 1968. Mrs T Fairbrother led the session with four adult and three junior directors present. Members are urged to enter multiple classes in the Spring Flower Show May 23 in the Christian Education Building Upper Auditorium. Entries due by 6 30 p.m. The group discussed summer gardens seed distribution and a community project to beautify Orono. New juice can plant containers will be made under Mrs J Quinton and sold at the June Decoration Day flower sale. The group thanks local support and hopes for ongoing help.

Family Day Service at Kirby Church Draws Large Crowd
At Kirby Church on Sunday May 12, the Family Day Service drew a large turnout as the Sunday School joined the regular congregation. A silver Baptismal bowl, donated by Mrs. Marion Dwyer in memory of the Bannon family, was presented and dedicated to church service. The service baptized several children including Richard Brian Lowery and Mary Ellen Lowery among others.

Fireworks Display To Be Held In Orono
The Orono Chamber of Commerce approved several projects at its Monday meeting and will host a fireworks display this Monday May 20. Committees will run events including bicycle races led by Mr. Stirling Mather with prizes from Mr. E Middleton. The group also backs the Blossom Tour and a film from the Orono Tree Nursery to be shown with the event on May 26. Additional plans cover a White Elephant Sale June 22 and a Bar B Q in Orono Park with Talent Night and Shopper's Mall to follow in early July.

Work progressed at the Orono Water Pumping Station in the village north end as Ven and Don Hart removed the pump and lowered it about six to eight feet into the well, with further steps indicated.

Last Thursday evening Very Wor. Bro. E. J. Hamm of the Orono Masonic Lodge received a fifty year jewel during a dinner in his honour. The event took place in the basement of the Orono United Church with Rt. Wor. Bro. Harry Inkpen, District Deputy Grand Master, as guest speaker among eighty attendees. Bro. O. W. Rolph chaired the presentation and joined speakers in congratulating Hamm.
