Donald MacDonald Speaks At CCF Convention In Orono

Donald MacDonald leader of the Ontario CCF spoke at the Durham CCF Convention in Orono on Friday evening last week declaring the CCP was the only party giving constant opposition. He praised the CCF's social legislation and warned Conservatives over price parity issues in agriculture.

Three Orono Brownies to Receive Golden Hand Badges

A Brownie meeting led by Susie Major included semaphore drills and a rehearsal of The Brownie Story for a June performance. Thirteen to seventeen Brownies will attend a weekend camp at the Hooey cottage. Three Brownies earn Golden Hand Badges and many pursue Golden Ladder badges as tests progress.

Six Orono Girls Graduate At C.G.L.T Graduation Service

Six Orono girls completed three years in the Canadian Girls in Training at Orono United Church. Doreen Alldread Anne Best Elizabeth Reid Marilyn Quantrill Shirley Vage and Norah Wood received certificates while Mr James Rickaby addressed the group. The Newcastle Junior Choir led singing and two anthems.

Barbara Keast and Neil Hooey Win Silver Medal Contest

The Silver Medal Contest under the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held at Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium on May 10. Barbara Keast and Neil Hooey won, with jury praise for all contestants. other winners included poster contest participants Patsy Jones, Dianne Gilbart, Douglas Barraball, Mary Jane Found, and Carol Todd from 37 posters.

Longtime Moose Jaw Farmer Richard Stewart Dies at 68

Richard Hector Stewart of 528 Ominica St E Moose Jaw Saskatchewan died suddenly May 1 at his Hodgeville farm. He helped on the farm since 1907 retired 1949 then moved to Moose Jaw. He leaves wife Mrs H Stewart daughter Mary Mrs Owen Telfer son Noble sister Mrs J W Ball five grandchildren and three brothers. Orono Baseball Club Sets May 20 Bowermanville Start

Orono Senior Baseball Club schedules opening action in Bowermanville on May 20 at 10 30 am with bowmanville as the opponent. First Orone game follows May 22 at 6 20 pm. PeeWee players hold Saturday workouts under coach E Graham with over twenty boys participating. Bantams train for the Minor Lakeshore league, six other teams, under the Orono Amateur Athletic Association sponsorship.

Fire damages E Taylor home. Orono fire brigade aids

Sunday afternoon a fire damaged the home of Mr and Mrs Earl Taylor in the village south area. The blaze started in a front room likely a Chesterfield chair and spread along an inner wall but was quickly controlled with minimal water. Neighbors alerted the Orono Fire Department and rain aided the response.

Orone W. A. To Hold A Strawberry Festival

The May meeting of the Woman's Association chaired by Mrs. J. Kitchen discussed delaying the strawberry festival to a later date and noted a bank balance of $281.05. Reports from officers highlighted correspondence and attendance at duties with talks on forgiveness homemaking and Christian home essentials. Twenty members attended with lunch and social time afterward.

Thirteen Children Baptised At Mother's Day Service

Mother's Day service at Orono United Church drew a full house with thirteen baptisms. The service featured a large choir and a duet titled A Blessed Day of Motherhood, plus a sermon on the Home as the basic institution of character and national security. Ernest Dent Named CCF Candidate for Durham Election

Ernest Dent, manager of the Orono Hydro-Electric Commission, was unanimously chosen at the Durham County CCF Convention in Orono on May 10 as the party’s candidate. Four nominations were received. Dent faced no opposition and pledged to advance CCF goals such as unemployment insurance, old age pensions, family allowances, a national health plan, and a new national labour code. He urged support for the CCF to fulfill ideals of social justice and world peace through humane policies.

New Bowmanville Post Office Opens May 27

Bowmanville will formally open its new post office on Monday May 27 at 2 PM with Hon Robert Winters Federal Public Works Minister attending from Ottawa. The modern building on Church and Temperance Streets includes a customs office and will replace the existing post office, which will become a public library.

Bowmanville Orono Combine Hockey Club Banquet May 23

Bowmanville Orono Combine Hockey Club plans a May 23 banquet at Oddfellow's Hall to close the 1956 57 season with about 150 attendees. A turkey dinner is served by Kirby United Church ladies, with a Ontario Hockey Association speaker and a post dinner dance. Lakeshore Hockey Trophy and Most Valuable Player Award will be presented. Tickets on sale from Mr Hesper Dean.
