Bowmanville Dominates Interschool Track Meet

Four high schools in the Durham District competed Monday at Clarke's High School. Bowermanville led with top athletes in most events. Clarke took second, Courtice third, and Whitby fourth. Sharon Tambiey of Clarke won the senior girls division, while Bob Best of Clarke tied for junior boys champion with two Bowermanville students. Bowermanville also claimed junior and intermediate titles, with senior boys going to John Kilpatrick of Bowmanville.

Liberal Annual Meet in Toronto Hosts Paul Martin Speech

The Ontario Liberal Association holds its annual meeting at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto this Friday and Saturday. Special luncheon speaker will be Paul Martin, secretary of state for external affairs. Delegates from Durham County include Russell C. Honey MP and other candidates and local figures such as John James and Mrs C G Anderson among attendees.

Orono Public School operetta Cinderella’s Slipper a smash hit

The Orono Public School presented Cinderella’s Slipper last Friday and Saturday to an audience of over four hundred. The operetta featured natural acting singing and costuming with notable stage settings including a pumpkin coach a fireplace and trees. Cast members included Mag Taggart Wendy Palmer Jianet Topham Dale Challiice Jane Reid Beverley Yennanit Ellen Millgan Dennis Cobbledick and Fred Bunting with applause for the Green Tailors Blaine Schmid Caroline Johnson and Miss Aulred the musical director and Miss Peggy Hancock the pianist.

Fireworks And Band In Orono On Monday

Orono Chamber of Commerce met at the Orono Restaurant with reports on fireworks and the harness racing rodeo show. Plans for a May 8 fireworks display at the Orono Fair grounds include the Orono Band performing from 8 pm until fireworks. A collection will offset costs. The annual harness race meet and rodeo are set for June 20 at the Orono Fair grounds starting at five. Oshawa Rodeo will present an hour-long program and a chestnut pony will be drawn for. A $150 request from the Durham Central Agricultural Society seeks support for the first day children parade with prizes for participating schools. The chamber debated funding until after the events.

Chamber Endorses Centennial Parklands Plan

The Chamber endorsed a Centennial project presented by Bob Hazelton. It proposes acquiring lands along the Orono stream to create nature and park areas. The proposal received unanimous Chamber support and was presented to Clarke Township.

Open House at Clarke High School Showcases Student Work

Clarke High School hosted a successful Open House drawing about five hundred parents and students. The event featured chemistry physics biology displays on power and sound waves, industrial arts wood and metalwork, art exhibits, a camera club, and a gym program including horse and trampoline routines. Donovan Collegiate Oshawa provided horizontal bar demonstrations, and Home Economics fashion show pieces modeled by students narrated by Mary Lynn Bailey and Dianne Gilbart.
