Planning for 1953 Orono Fair Underway

Planning for the 1953 Orono Fair progressed at a Durham Central Agricultural Society meeting with officers and directors eyeing a September event. Delegates discussed school child exhibits, midway and horse racing placement, keeping clean tents, and improving grounds to honor Coronation year with shade trees and a new north entrance.

Department Lands And Forests Exhibit At Spring Show

The Central Ontario Spring Show in Peterborough runs March 17 to 20 at the Fair Grounds. The Department of Lands and Forests showcases forest and wildlife conservation, tree seeds, and fire fighting gear to promote care with cigarette butts and campfires. Fire season prep includes Timber scaling and observations at towers and head quarters. W C T U Meeting in Orono United Church

The March 1 W C T U gathering in the Sunday School room of Orono United Church opened with Mrs. H Walsh presiding. The program included devotional by Mrs R Allen, an Irish St Patrick tribute, songs by Mrs G Carson and her mother, and a reading on St Patrick with a Canadian cities contest.

Stuart Ryan Q C described the Ganaraska River Conservation Authority as a joint provincial and municipal effort begun in 1946. He explained soil erosion, forest planting programs, and dam plans shifting to forestry to control flooding. The authority now oversees about 6 347 acres with over 2 251 000 trees planted by 1952 and aims to expand the forest and wildlife protection.

Miss Mary Rutherford Dies at 72 in Kirby

Miss Mary Rutherford of Kirby died at Bowmanville Memorial Hospital on Friday May 13 at age 72 after a short illness. The funeral was held at Kirby church Monday with Rev John Kitchen officiating and many flowers. She left two brothers Will and S Rutherford and a sister Mrs Jim Wannan.
