Clarke Township Council approved purchasing a new road truck and a sand box at a special meeting. The road superintendent will seek tenders for the truck, with the sand box to be bought through the County as part of a regional procurement. The current single sanding vehicle is inadequate for icing periods.
Clarke Township Progressive Conservative Association held its annual meeting at Oddfellow's Hall with over eighty attendees. New officers elected included Llew Hallowell as President Elsie Fisk as 1st Vice President Harold Gibson as 2nd Vice President Kay Lycett as Secretary Alma Cuttell as Assistant Secretary Leslie Reid as Treasurer and J Reid as retiring president offered congratulations.
Trent University will conduct an excavation at Serpent Mounds Provincial Park on Rice Lake this summer under Kenneth E Kidd of Trent University Anthropology. The project, in cooperation with Ontario Parks Division, aims to display finds to the public and give limited field experience to Trent students. Ronald Whate of Peterborough will lead field operations.
Leskard School took top place in Triple Trio and second in USA chorus at the Peterborough festival. Diane Almas and Lance Newell won the duet, Gail Brown and Pamela Newell earned third, Pamela Newell was second in Girls Solo under 11, Shelley Battams earned third. Enterprise Public School claimed two firsts two fourths and a fifth, with its chorus winning Unison class and two part chorus. Miss Aveline Lycett won Girls Solo for 16 and under. Craig Cochrane placed fourth.
Michael Starr MP Ontario County addressed Clarke Township Conservatives blaming the Liberal government for disunity and alleged incompetence. He praised John Diefenbaker, criticized party infighting, and cited reports like the B and B Commission and concerns over Quebec concessions.
At the annual meeting the Durham Farmer County Co operative reported 1964 sales of 333 800 dollars, up 1 300 from 1953 and the best in five years. Directors recommended 3 percent dividends on regular purchases and 1 percent on lay ration and broiler feed. A 4 cash payoff of the 1960 patronage loans was authorized. The meeting at Orono United Church drew 200 attendees with a turkey dinner by the UCW and entertainment by the Country Four and Neil Allin. President Wesley Yellowlees noted new farm merchandising and a new warehouse roof, and an alliance with United Co op of Ontario to secure better feed prices. A seed cleaning plant was deemed too costly to pursue.
