The Conservatives of Durham County unanimously selected Dr Percy Vivian as their candidate for the forthcoming federal election. The Orono Town Hall vote featured a capacity turnout with Vivian, a former Durham County representative and cabinet minister, unopposed at nomination.
About 100 ladies attended the W.M.S. Evening Auxiliary birthday supper in the Sunday School Auditorium. Guests included the Afternoon Auxiliary Anglican Ladies and G.G.I.T. groups. Mr. and Mrs. Schauffler spoke, and Miss Dorothy Pearson was announced to speak March 21.
The annual Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held in Orono at 8 p.m. on Friday March 8 in the United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Women from 142 countries join in meditation and prayer on the theme Who shall separate us. The service is undenominational and open to all women and girls in the village and surrounding communities.
Orono Public School marked Education Week with an Open House on Tuesday afternoon. About ninety parents attended, more than in prior years, touring rooms and viewing student work including a grades 7 and 8 scrapbook. Board members Horace Best F Lycett and G Cotter spoke, Colison led a student musical program, and lunch was served by senior girls.
Hope and Clarke Township councils reach a boundary road agreement. Reeve J T Brown of New Castle met with Hope council to settle maintenance, with Clarke to maintain south of concession five and Hope to maintain north of concession five.
The Bowmanville-Orono Combines moved ahead in the seven game playdown after a 8 to 8 tie? win over Lindsay on Tuesday. West Brothers supplied six goals as Dean, Keith, and Junior added. Lindsay’s Gra ham, Hutton, and Freeman scored. The seventh game in Bowmanville could determine the series with a win or tie securing the Combines.
The Afternoon Auxiliary of W M S held its Tuesday meeting March 5 in the United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Mrs Drum mond led worship on The Whole Armour of God from Ephesians. Reports were given and a packing day for relief clothing and bedding was set for the second Tuesday in May.
Sixteen teams competed at Peter Campbell Memorial Arena Port Hope with two Orono squads in action. The Pee Wees beat Newcastle 3 2 with Gary McMackin scoring all three goals and assists from Grant Greenwood and Ricky Pierce. The Bantams lost 3 1 to Newcastle. Terry Carleton scored for Orono. Millbrook overwhelmed the Pee Wees 11 2 to end Orono’s run. Newcastle Junior A beat Bowmanville 2 0 with Terry Graham strong in net.
Bowmanville Orono Combines overwhelmed Lindsay Regents 8-1 in game five to tie the series 2-2. Robbie Robinson and Maxie Yourth sparked the offense as BOC outshot Lindsay 52-24 at Lindsay Arena. The series shifts to Orono Friday night with admission 50 and 25 cents.
In Orono the Progressive-Conservative Association of Durham County held a pre election convention at Township Hall with Dr John Charlton as guest speaker. Charlton urged honesty about the Prime Minister's future and criticized current policy on the Middle East and UN leadership while praising Diefenbaker and Conservative prospects.
