Fire destroys Orono Wood Products and threatens nearby buildings

A Monday afternoon blaze at Orono Wood Products, a four story frame plant, gutted the building and endangered the adjacent home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Richie and the Orono Garage. Firefighters saved new equipment but suffered heavy losses to existing machinery and materials. The Bowenville and Bowmanville crews assisted as planes circled and traffic clogged the street.

Clarke Township approves Warble Fly inspector and notes tax rise

Clarke Township council met March 2 with Reeve Lowery and five officials. They appointed Lyall Lowery inspector for Warble Fly Control and planned a pre inspection briefing. The district high school area raised its tax rate to 8 mills for 1953, lifting Clarke’s levy from $17,488.55 in 1952 to $20,126.20 in 1953. 1400 assessments exist and an assessor will be hired. Road Superintendent Dickinson named Weed Inspector for 1953. road voucher totalling $54,815.20 approved.

Kendal And Orono Tie In Broomball Round Three

About sixty players and fans watched at the Oronor rink Tuesday evening as the third round of broomball unfolded. Orono beat Kirby 1 to 0 in the first game, Kendal defeated the Leskard entry in the second, and Kendal and Crono are tied with five points each while Kirby has two and Leskard remains at zero.

Public School Children Present Windows to United Church

Orono Public School pupils raised funds over two years to donate two stained glass windows to the Orono United Church. March 1 service featured the presentation by Mr. Lycett and a readings by Mary Ann Armstrong, with music by Mr. Mitchell. The talk emphasized moral education linking home school and church, and cited a deaf blind child taught to communicate by touch.

Thelma Curtis obituary

The death of Mary Emily Thelma Curtis occurred February 20 1953 in Fenelon Falls Ontario after a long illness. She was born October 31 1905 in Tyrone, educated in Orono, and trained as a nurse at Nichols Hospital Peterborough earning a B N in 1928. She married Grattan Curtis in 1935 and is survived by her husband daughter Shirley son Murray a sister Greta and many mourners.

Cubs Meet At United Church In Basment Meeting

Orone Wolf Cub Pack held a regular meeting in the basement of the United Church. The session included the Grand Howl, fee collection, lessons on the Compass stage and highway code, games, and the addition of three new chums Robbie Reid Billy Reid Harold Quantrill.

Orono Skating Carnival Tops In Entertainment This Fri Sat

The seventh annual Orone Skating Carnival will light the Orone Arena Friday and Saturday with 75 local skaters in candyland and Coronation scenes. Carolyn Jones and Douglas Lycett lead pre and main acts joined by Adele Cooper Mary Ann Armstrong and guests from Oshawa Skating Club in a colorful, music filled program.

Woman's Association March Meeting Hears Plans and Honors

The March meeting in the Sunday School room presided by Mrs. EB Rainey approved a play by Wesleyville for April 10 and appointed committees. A $25 donation to the Red Cross was voted, and Mrs. W. Hoar received a life membership. Nominations opened for three directorate vacancies as the Farmers Cooperative grows momentum in agriculture.

Evening Auxiliary Celebrates Sixth Birthday With Guests

The Evening Auxiliary held its sixth birthday supper meeting at the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. About 85 ladies attended, with birthday cake and ice cream. Mrs Fisher of Brooklyn spoke on The Royal Coronation, urging queenly conduct and Christlike jewels for daily life.
