Swedish Deep Sea Expedition Probes Ocean Floor Depths
The Swedish 1,450 ton Albatross returned to Goteborg after a five month world cruise to study the deep ocean bed from 2,000 to over 4,000 fathoms. Using piston cores, depth sounding, ultrasonic profiles, and extensive sampling, the voyage collected thousands of water and sediment samples and even raised living organisms from depths beyond 4,200 fathoms.
