Decoration Day Service Draws Large Orono Crowd

Rev. J Griffith of Bowmanville spoke on Fellowship at Orono cemetery Decoration Day. Amid fine weather, relatives and fraternal groups laid flowers, with the Orono Band providing music and prayers led by Rev. S Littlewood. The service closed with Fast Falls the Eventide.

Clarke Township Rehabilitation Committee Meeting Update

Clarke Township Rehabilitation Committee met on Wednesday evening June 20 to plan aid for returning service members. Attendance was good, and organizers urged reporting changes to Secretary J. J. Mellor to complete an Honor Roll and expand finance and program efforts. The group discussed settling soldiers on land, finding employment, and assisting those returning, asking for broad cooperation and volunteer help.

Public Spirited Citizen Donates To Orono Band

After a cemetery service the Orono band visited Orme Gamsby’s home to lift his spirits with music while he recovers. He surprised them with a $5,000 bank note to help lift the band’s mortgage on instruments. He urged community backing and praised the band’s role in town life.

Froste Smith wedding tied at Orono Church

The marriage of Clare Alice Smith of Port Hope to Radio Officer Wilfred Froste of Orono was solemnized at Orono United Church on June 27 1945 by Rev S Littlewood. The couple left for points west after the ceremony and were attended by Mr and Mrs Charles Tyrrell.

Wedding reception and trip after ceremony at church

The bride and groom hosted a reception in the church basement with the bride's mother in mauve and white and a corsage of roses. The groom's mother wore flowered jersey with a roses corsage. They sat at a pink and white head table with a three tier cake and left for a westward honeymoon. They will reside at 76 Aylmer Street Peterborough after returning.

Ninety Guides Camp at Orono Verge of Hilarity

Velma Armstrong reports a three day Girl Guides camp at Staples farm south of Orono with about 90 Guides from Orono and Bowmanville. They pitched tents, cooked over wet wood, held sports for a Rotary Cup, and thanked local supporters from the community and Rotary Club. Sunday featured a church address on Peace and plans for a Bowmanville camp next year.

Mrs John Brown Born 1865 at Clarke near Enterprise

Mrs John Brown born Mary Jane Bigelow 1865 Clarke near Enterprise eldest of eight children. She married John Brown in 1897 and lived near Kirby then Oshawa with daughter. Died June 15 1945 at Newcastle after a month of sickness. Survived by husband three daughters one sister two brothers and two grandchildren. Funeral at Kirby United Church June 19 conducted by Rev S Littlewood with solo by Mrs H Lowery. Pallbearers listed and many floral tributes noted.

Band Concert In Orono Saturday Night June 30

The Orono Band will give a concert in front of the town hall Saturday evening around nine, weather permitting, to raise funds to pay off the mortgage. Draw tickets will be sold, with proceeds supporting the remaining balance of about 500 dollars after past efforts.
