Junior Congregation Honors Mrs Kitchen and Olaf Kitchen

The Sun day School audience at Orono United Church praised Mrs Kitchen for organizing the Junior Congregation and her son Olaf. The afternoon featured songs recitations and group activities with gifts presented to Olaf Kitchen and Mrs Kitchen by the children.

Ex-service men push forward with Orono cenotaph foundation

A group of ex service men at Odd fellows Hall agreed to start the cenotaph project in Orono. They raised funds from their own pockets to begin foundation work with free labor and a merchant donating cement. Work started Wednesday on the designated plot as plans call for an immediate foundation build and future main structure when funds allow.

Village Sidewalks Completed To List Industrial Properties

Orono Police Trustees met in regular session after touring the village and inspecting sidewalk work. Total sidewalk cost was 787.60 to contractor G Winter plus 25 for tree removal. project under the 1000 budget.

Awards Presented To Brownies At Enrolment Ceremonies

Last week a Brownie enrolment ceremony was held with Tawny Owl Doreen White welcoming guests. Marie Hooey led singing of the Queen as Colleen Flynn enrolled. Service stars, Golden Hands, Golden Bars, and Golden Ladders were awarded to numerous members. Gifts were given to drivers of Brownie camp trips, and Rita Barr received a cosmetic kit on departure. A short play highlighted helping around the home, followed by a social hour.

Orono Annual Sports Day Set For Monday Afternoon

The annual Orono Sports Day will be held at Orono Park on Monday July 1 starting at 1:00 p.m. A Bantam and an Intermediate Baseball game will be played with races for children and prizes for winners. Plan to attend.

Orono Takes Two Victories In Intermediate Baseball

The Orono Intermediate Baseball Club won twice last week defeating Bowmanville 11 to 7 at home and Cobourg 12 to 4 at the local park. Don Mallett led Orono with a .415 batting average and also pitched the Cobourg game. A revised schedule lists away and home games through July and August.

Clarke Newcastle discuss 401 extension and overpass plans

Clarke Township and the Village of Newcastle held a joint meeting to discuss extending Highway 401 through the two municipalities. They proposed two access points and three overpasses or underpasses, with a focus on safe connections at the 401 and 115 junction and avoiding through traffic in Newcastle. A fire protection agreement was also considered, with Newcastle to decide whether to pursue a township or private option.

Orono Park Opens July Athletic Recreational Program

The Orono Athletic Association kicks off a July recreational program at Orono Community Park starting Tuesday with supervision by Mrs. Marvin Lunn and aides. Activities run five days a week for children aged three to twelve, with nursery and full-term fees, daily crafts and multiple sports planned. Registration on Thursday drew about sixty children, with more expected.

Two Qualified Teachers To Join Orone High School Staff

Orono High School adds two new faculty members for the coming year Miss I Wautier and Mr J Ford both Toronto graduates. Miss Wautier will teach French in all grades and the commercial subjects plus girls physical education, bringing a modern immersion method to the department. Mr Ford will teach Latin Geography and some English and directs the Toronto Mennonite choir a capella singing, with plans to expand the Glee Club.

Werry Delights Aud ience With Peter Marshall Topie

The Evening Auxiliary of the W.M.L.S. met in the United Church room on June 20 at 8 15. Mrs Werry of New Berlin spoke about Peter Marshall and shared a sermon from Mr Jones Meet the Master. Members enjoyed tea and social time after the program.
