Forty Horses Race at Orono Raceway Saturday

Orono Raceway hosted over forty horses in twelve heats marking a record turnout for the track. Three local entries from Dr. Cowie Bowmanville Jack Reid Crono and A W Glenney Newcastle competed. Gadabout set the day’s fastest time 2 10 1 5 with Celia’s Counsel still holding the track record.

Wood Hoy Nuptials in Newtonville Parsonage

Mary Helen Hoy and Keith Egerton Wood wed June 12 1954 at 2 p.m. in Newtonville Parsonage with Rev. Pike officiating. Attendants Gwen Ransberry and Dick Wood, reception at the bride’s home, guests from Peterborough Toronto Bowmanville Mulbrook Pontypool and Orono. The couple will reside in Orono.

Stephens Jones Nuptials At Orono United Church

Hileen Isabel Jones and Donald Keith Stephens wed at Orono United Church on Saturday June 19 1954 with Rev John Kitchen officiating. Ontario Highways Department undergoes major reorganization

Hon. George H. Doucett announces complete reorganization of Ontario Department of Highways effective Monday June 14. Deputy Minister M. A. Elson and Chief Engineer W. A. Clarke lead a five section administration with Directors of Planning Personnel and more plus 18 division engineers and 19 municipal engineers across Ontario. M. N. McIlrwen moves to District No. 7 Port Hope as part of the new structure.

Seventy-Five Attend Horticultural Picnic At Orono Park

Around seventy five persons attended the Annual Picnic of the District Horticultural Association at Orono Park last Wednesday. Twenty five came from Orono with attendees from Woodville Fenelon Falls Bobcaygeon Peterborough Newcastle and Agincourt. Speakers included Mr Clark secretary of the Ontario Horticultural Association and Mr Triffin Agincourt President of the local district association. The group visited the Forestry Station Lang Memorial Chapel and the Orono United Church before enjoying picnic lunches and a sociable afternoon.

Evening Auxiliary Meeting at Home of President

The Evening Auxiliary held its regular monthly gathering at president Hileen Billings home with about thirty two members present. Weather forced indoor social time on the lawn. Devotional led by Rena Tamblyn Alma Cuttell Eileen Billings and Dorothy Bailey focused on Time. Games and contests followed with lunch served. District notes report municipal engineer D A Gorrie oversees Ontario districts and Marsden transfer to Toronto District No 6.

Mrs. Halpenny Keynote at W A Special Sunday Service

Mrs. J L Halpenny of Toronto, former Dominion Council president, spoke as guest speaker at a Wo man’s Association service. Rev John Kitchen led the service, Mrs E Rainey read the lesson The Good Samaritan, with a large choir and special duets by Mrs A A Drummond and Mrs Geo Carson. The gathering, addressing duties and fellowship, heard of Halpenny’s Canada wide travels and her forthcoming World Council Assembly delegation. The collection pleasingly exceeded expectations.

Orono Orphans Banquet Highlights Sportsmenship and Plans

About 47 attended a Monday evening banquet at the Ehnhurst Hotel in Newcastle for the Orono Orphans Tockey Club. Guests praised the team’s clean play last season, with a telegram of congratulations from Tory Gregg. The club plans to enter the Intermediate Class again, use Port Hope Arena as home, and may add or replace a few players. Officers were elected with Meg West as secretary treasurer and Dan as manager. a softball team was proposed with coach Clifford Coolper, and a Junior Hockey Club discussion was tabled.

Orono Pupils Top Field Day Honors in Newcastle Meet

Orono Public School led the field at the Annual Field Day sponsored by the Teachers Association and the Newcastle Lions Club. Starkville won rural honors with 29 points while Orono led urban schools with 61 points.

Newcastle Lions Carnival Friday Night at Ball Park

Newcastle Lions Club hosts annual carnival at Newcastle Ball Park beginning 7 PM with a softball game between Newcastle Ladies and Orono. carnival admission is free after the game. Tug of War, bingo, and amusements accompany a grand prize Peterborough boat draw. Proceeds fund Newcastle Lion Charities.
