Fire Destroys Farm House East of Orono

A Saturday blaze of unknown origin destroyed a brick farm home of Mr and Mrs Laverne Patterson east of Orono on the fifth concession of Clarke. Neighbors could not save the building or contents, leaving only a few items, with the car moved away and the family aided by Francis Cowan providing a trailer.

Air Cadet Financial Statement Spells Clarke Squadron Books

The financial statement for Clarke Squadron No 595 Air Cadets covers April 20 1955 to June 12 1955. Receipts include SERTA donations and Department of National Defence grant with total receipts listed. Expenditures show equipment, camp expenses insurance rink rent time flagpole postage inspection entertainment save etc. Balance shows on hand.

Parsonage Exterior Repainted And Porch Replaced

The parsonage exterior has been repainted white with green trim. The front porch was removed and replaced by a cement verandah with iron railings. A canopy will be installed over the verandah soon.

Mr and Mrs Patterson and their son Gary will relocate to another house on the farm.

Summer Park Recreation Program Starts July At Orono

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association announces a July morning program at Orono Park from 9:00 to noon supervised by Mr. George Collins. Activities include various sports for area children with a staff ready for operation on July 2. An executive meeting will decide on a water program and safety readiness of the swimming tank.

Orono Park Swimming Tank Opens for All Ages

The Orono Park swimming tank opened after minor repairs to serve adults and children during the hot week. Mill Pond swimming should be discouraged due to depth and safety concerns. The park drew Sunday picnic crowds as the Athletic Association seeks more safety work and painting inside the tank, costing about 150 to 200 dollars. Red Cross swimming and water safety classes begin Tuesday July 8 with Mary Ann Armstrong leading and Jo Ann Rutherford assisting.

Red Cross Swimming Registration Opens July 3

The Orone Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program starts Tuesday July 3 with Mary Ann Armstrong as instructor and JoAnn Rutherford as assistant. Registration fee is 0.50 for each child. Senior Class 9:00 to 9:40, Intermediate 9:40 to 10:20, Junior 10:20 to 10:59, Beginners 10:50 to 11:20, Tadpoles 12:20 to 12:00. Proficient swimmers over 12 may sign up for Royal Life Saving at 12:00 with the instructress.

Orono Gains Half Game In Cobourg Series

Orono takes a half game in a home and home set with Cobourg after a tie game in Orono. Mallet pitched well for Orono while Stanley matched Cobourg batters. Don Mercer led Orono at the plate with 2 for 3 as West also contributed a 2 for 4. The Cobourg win came on Monday 4 to 2 with errors hurting Orono.

Clarke Township Retenders Gravel Hauling Contract

The Township of Clarke retendered trucking and spreading 25 000 tons of gravel for the year on municipal roads. Previously William Sittler held the contract at 57 cents per yard and the retendering included two bids quoted by ton or yard. The prior Sittler bid of 57 cents per yard was considered but the retendering proceeded with new bids from Welby and Lowery and another bidder.

Decoration Day Observed At Orono Cemetery Sunday

Local residents gather at Orono Cemetery on Sunday June 24 at 2:00 p.m. Clergy will officiate and the Orono Band will start a program at 1:15. The crowd includes Mr and Mrs E Hay and family of Islington, Mr and Mrs Norman Allin and family, and Mr and Mrs R H Logan. A concert by The Orowd Band follows at Orono Park on Sunday July 8 at 7:30 p.m. with marches selections and operettas.

New Choir Gowns Dedicated by Orono Women Association

The Orono Women's Association and Oshawa Presbytery held services dedicating new choir gowns to the church choir. Rev W G Berry urged Christian living and mission work while Mrs E R Rainey presented the gowns to Mrs George Carson, with dedication prayers. Members discussed Safe Driving and gambling, and Mrs Rowe celebrated forty fifth wedding anniversary with a salad service.

Durham federation protests irrigation water use in tobacco lands

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture held its final meeting of the season at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Larmer. Directors criticized lack of a clear policy on parity prices and urged provincial authorities to address the issue. A second denunciation targeted irrigation that drains natural water streams in Port Hope area watershed, affecting Ganaraska flows. The federation planned to protest to the Minister of Planning and Development and Ganaraska Conservation Authority, with outdoor worship revival and fall TV coverage planned.
