Newtonville Under Centres Act Discussed by Clarke Council

Clarke Township council gave two readings to a by law to make Newtonville Hall a Community Hall under the Community Centres Act. Monies from the Newtonville playground sale will be held in trust until a use plan is approved. A supplementary Orono road budget of 1200 was approved to resurface roads and address dust from the water project.

Banquet Honors OC E Youngman for Long Service

A banquet at the New Dutch Oven Restaurant honored Ed Youngman who on March 14 1965 completed eight and a half years with the Department of Lands and Forests. He retired this year as Reforestation Superintendent at Durham Forest Headquarters and received a travelling bag. A loan of up to 19900 was arranged from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for the presentation.

Hope Township considers immediate zoning and planning action

Murray Burgess urged Hope Township council to fast track planning and zoning, proposing new homes be built within two years, storm sewers installed, and lots 5 to 36 in Concession J1 zoned residential. Councillors pressed for action, with a plan to consult the Department of Municipal Affairs at Queen’s Park.

Orono Public Library May Readers Highlight Child Interest

May circulation reached 725 books with 432 to children while adult reads totaled for nonfiction and 214 fiction. Librarian Mrs. B. Mercer reported a drop from April and the board appointed Mrs. Gordon Simpson as assistant librarian with evening hours to resume in September. Funds are depleted awaiting the August Provincial Grant.

Mosport Race Crowd Sets Canadian Sports Attendance Record

More than 58,000 spectators attended the Player's 200 at Mosport near Orono led by John Surtess of England who won in a Lola T70. He also set a new 200 mile time record, while Jim Hall captured the lap record in a Chaparral. Bruce MacLaren and Hugh Dibbley faced crashes, and a tent city hosted 20 to 30 thousand campers amid heavy traffic and a campfire incident in Bowmanville hospital treated three Toronto youths for burns.

Two Fire Calls For Mosport

The Orono fire department answered two calls to Mosport last weekend with one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Both fires were in the bush and started from camp fires.

Bride-To-Be Honour'd in Kendal Shower for Carol Little

Friday evening hosts Mrs Ed Graham and Mrs Carl Billings presented Miss Carol Little of Kendal with a teflon lined frying pan and two place settings of her china plus a corsage of pink carnations and lily of the valley as she prepares for July wedding to Mr Wayne Bailey. About thirty ladies attended for games contests and a sing song followed by buffet lunch.

County Votes to Join Regional Jail Plan With Subsidy Details

The United Counties Council approved joining Peterborough City and County and Victoria and Haliburton Counties to build a regional jail. The project would cost 1.2 million before a 30 000 top-up, with the Ontario Government covering 50 percent. The Counties’ share stands at 31.6 percent based on prisoner days, and the plan could involve selling the present jail for about 35 000. Critics warn the Counties would fund a facility for Peterborough, while supporters cite regional administration and better rehabilitation through a larger inmate pool.

Elm Disease Control Tested With Bidrin Injection

At Orono Forest Station a Shell Oil Company chemical Bidrin was demonstrated as a systemic insecticide injected into tree wood to kill bark beetles and stop Dutch Elm disease. It is not for infected trees, requires licensed applicators in Ontario, and costs about 15 dollars per tree per season.
