Orono Trustees met Monday and voted to remove the four new street lamps on the west side of Main Street for relocation to other village sites. They urged a survey by Toronto police to set parking rules in the business district and discussed planning for Orono with the Planning Board.
Russell Rowe announced that all rural and urban school boards must join larger area boards, ending the era of one-room schools. The Private Bills Committee approved that Hastings boards join township areas, shrinking 56 urban boards to nine across United Counties. Trustees may be elected from all ratepayers, with five elected to new boards, and a school inspector may serve as secretary without voting rights.
At the Orono Hydro meeting the Commissioners approved a new water heater rental rate of $2.00 per month for seven years, with the heater and installation included. After seven years ownership transfers to the purchaser, and outright heater purchase is $72.00. Bonds for the debenture issue are printed and soon offered again.
Mr Alex Carruthers MPP Durham and Mr Russell Rowe MPP Northumberland attended the Ontario Fine-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board meeting on July 9 1964. They discussed high production costs, export aims, improved buyer producer relations, and board compliance to ensure efficiency. Peter Newell received praise for his brief to the federal agriculture committee, and Rhodesia’s acreage control discussion was noted.
The 1964 proposed equalization for 1965 taxation was presented listing each community with 1963 taxable totals and 1964 proposed figures. Counties total proposed equalized value is $84,490,817.
The Durham Liberal Association picnic at Walton Park Newcastle drew over two hundred as five leadership hopefuls outlined views ahead of the September 17 and 18 convention. Edward Sargent was to speak but did not appear. Gould criticized the current government while urging investment shifts to smaller towns. Green warned the party risks a wilderness if it fails at the convention. Templeton urged rejecting an NDP Liberal affiliation and touted two 1967 celebrations for Liberals in Ontario.
