The Orono Chamber of Commerce will honor the Honour Students of Orono High School at a dinner meeting, where they will receive a memento. Arrangements are led by H Duvall and Principal A Witherspoon, with a September or October date tentatively set.
Ganaraska River Conservation Authority members toured lands including Garden Hill pond and Cold Springs. They plan an offer to Canadian National Railways for several parcels west of Molson Pond, Port Hope, and elsewhere in Hope Township. A $50 donation was approved for Durham County Soil Judging prizes in July. The Ontario lands and forests department saw no biological objection to a fish ladder at Corbett's dam and awaits Authority comment after further information. Port Hope welcomed the scheme as a boost to tourism.
The Orono Band rehearses for a public appearance at Orono Park on Sunday afternoon July 3. The 2 30 p m concert under the shelter will feature overtures by noted composers martial airs lighter selections and special arrangements of popular tunes.
The Orono Intermediate Baseball Club beat Belleville twice in Belleville and Orono last week, moving to second in the league behind Belleville. Sunday’s Belleville game saw Orono rally from 12-1 to win 15-14, with Keith st held to one ball pitched and Mavety hitting into a double play.
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority seeks provincial approval to purchase 245 acres in Darlington Township under Scheme Two. The $7350 deal, at $30 per acre with a 150 day option, requires $3675 from the Authority with $1175 raised from members. The scheme also includes an automatic stream-recording gauge at the Jackman road bridge in Bowmanville.
A ledger of donations to the Orono Community Memorial Park Swimming Pool shows many individuals and local groups contributing amounts ranging from 1.00 to 50.00. Names include E. H. Samuel, Mrs. Emma Lunn, John Schoenmaker, Alma S. Bowen, Fred Kelly, Hilda Schauffler, Orono Garage, Gordon Atkins, Ralph Hardware, Roy Foster, Rowena E. Tony Mitchell, 17, of Orono and Peterborough area, excels in auto mechanics and has topped his high school class for two years. He plans an apprenticeship, aims for journey man papers, then seeks a technologist qualification after nine years of night school, with interests in track, cross country, hockey, and baseball. He is the grandson of Mr and Mrs William Mitchell of Orono.
Ontario Hydro restored power after a 90 minute outage in Orono on Wednesday afternoon. Crews replaced three overloaded transformers that had shorted with larger capacity units able to handle current village demand.
The Twelfth of July parade in Oshawa was led by the Orono Band with Orange Lodges from the area. About 70 lodges and 15 bands took part despite a brief rain shower. Prizes went to Lindsay Port Hope Omemee and Peterborough lodges with several special mentions for juvenile and ladies lodges.
