Newtonville Man Drowns In Crooked Creek Waters

Arthur Merrill aged 21 of New onville drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming in a farm pond near Crooked Creek Clarke Township east of Crooked Creek. He was pulled from the water by William Mitchell of Oshawa after several dives. Mitchell and his brother Leonard administered artificial respiration with help from companions and Constable Dryden. Dr H Ferguson of Bowmanville arrived with an inhalator and Merrill was pronounced dead as accidental drowning after over an hour of treatment.

Orono Pee Wees Fall in Season Opener to Port Hope

The Orono Pee Wees lost 18 5 at the local park as Port Hope dominated early with seven first inning runs. Ralph Kennedy struggled on the mound allowing four hits and three walks while costly fielding errors aided the visitors. Orono fought back with two runs in the second and additional scores later, led by Charles Reid and Craig Hind, but fell short.

Trinity College Expands With New Wing 205 Enrollment

Trinity College plans a new wing 4Bickle House on the southeast corner of Brent House to increase total enrollment to 205 seniors. Construction began two weeks ago, funded by E. P. Bickle and designed by Bill Greer of Shore and Moffatt. The two storey addition mirrors older buildings and will free space for fifteen more boys and provide Masters apartments. Completion hoped before September term starts.

Port Hope Edges Orono Bantams In Tight Game

Port Hope defeated the Orono Bantams 4 to 2 in Port Hope on Saturday evening. Orono led briefly before Port Hope pulled ahead in the later innings. Wayne Bailey and Donnie Lycett pitched for Orono. Lycett scored Orono’s first run on a single. Ross Tamblyn scored on a walk and later on a Tom Cowan Malcom McKenzie Peter Maartense sequence. Port Hope put two runs on the board in the third and the winning run in the fourth.

Miscellaneous Shower for Jane Bosgraaf Held at Home

A miscellaneous shower was held Tuesday evening at Mrs. Keith McDonald’s home for Miss Jane Bosgraaf. Assisting were Mrs. Beauchamp, Mrs. Hardy and Mrs. Tolmie. About thirty neighbors joined as Tommie McDonald and Sharon Hardy acted as bride and groom. A decorated chair and gifts framed the event as games and a sociable evening followed. Guests came from Bowmanville and Oshawa.

Irone Shares Victory And Last Two Games In Orono

Orono defeated Portage 18 to 11 on the local diamond as Irone led with a strong hit total. The team battled with a short roster on both nights and earlier Bowmenville dropped 11 to 2 in a decisive road loss.

Orono Defeats Cobourg in Close Nine Inning Game

Orono edged Cobourg 4 to 2 at Orono Park as Deon Mercer and Junior West fueled the offense. Mercer collected four singles in five at bats and West drove in the winning run with a third inning triple, while Keith West and Don Mallet combined for seven innings on the mound. Cobourg tied the score late before Orono pulled ahead in the bottom of the ninth.

Clarke Township property taxes rise notably this year

Clarke Township residents face higher municipal taxes with significant increases in District High School and residential rates. Residential and farm rates are lowered slightly by a provincial grant, while commercial and industrial rates rise. Orono Chamber to Elect Officers at Monday Meeting

The Orono Chamber of Commerce held a Monday evening session to revitalize its goals and set a slate of officers for the coming year. A general meeting in the Orono Municipal Building at 8:00 p.m. will present the officer slate and a brochure for Orono. The chamber also plans to press the Police Trustees to mark Main Street for parking.

Dianne Phasey Weds Frederick Parish in Oshawa Ceremony

The marriage of Dianne Louise Phasey and Frederick Andrew Parish was solemnized at Simcoe Street United Church Oshawa. A double ring ceremony followed by an open house at the couple’s Anna polis Avenue home. Guests came from Toronto Whitby Brooklin Newcastle Haliburton Orono Port Perry Lakefield Bridgenorth Bowmanville Hampton Tyrone Oshawa and other towns. A wedding dance was held at Summerland Lodge Haliburton that Saturday night.
